Painting fireplace tiles?

We have an open, working fire in our living room. The tiles clash with everything else in our front room. I'm thinking about painting them black. I've seen that people are refurbing their fireplace tiles using chalk paint. Does anyone know if it's safe to do this?

I think its safe (its water-based) but whether the paint will stay on there for very long is another matter.

I've painted windowsill tiles and on advice used a dulux trade primer first then normal paint. Seems okay so far...

@misty9

I don't think the issue is with painting tiles themselves, it is the fact that they are part of an open, working fireplace where the problem lies and so one wouldn't want to use a paint that was potentially flammable.

We painted our fireplace surround using a heat-proof paint like the kind you’d use for a radiator? I don’t think there’d be a huge choice of colours but probably black is an option
