Dear all,
Please could you recommend the best town in Kent for living and commuting into London. I’m a single professional and don’t drive, so ideally close to stations, nice community, shops, restaurants, garden centres around , good vet and safety is a must . My fav would be Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone,Ashford, Folkestone. Ideally looking for 1bed house with a garden . Any areas I should avoid¿ Or any other places to consider¿ Happy to commute for an hour journey.Thank you ☺️

Tunbridge Wells is quite buzzy and seems to have lots going on. Folkestone is also good and by the sea of course but check the cost of commuting to London as I suspect it's £££. I think anywhere near a station will attract a premium and a one hour journey door to door ambitious from these places.
Maidstone is cheaper still and pleasant enough. The Medway towns get a bad press but Rochester isn't too bad and fairly cheap.

The same feeling about The Medway. Thank you for the others ! Agree about a premium for travel, but might be working from home some days, hope it will save ! :)

I’m about to buy my first in a cute little village called Biddenden, about twenty minutes east of Tunbridge Wells. Nearest station is Headcorn (56 mins to London Bridge)

londongirl12 · 19/11/2020 18:57

Folkestone you're looking at a massive commute. And if you got the high speed train, a hefty price too!!
Faversham is nice. There's good bits of Medway on the outskirts like Hempstead.

How lovely! Congratulations! Unfortunately, my budget is not so big ..

It depends on where in London you need to commute to, but Folkestone is less than an hour but pretty expensive. Can highly recommend it as a fantastic place to live and also has great investment potential. This one is in a great area and fits your budget www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/85642066

How about faversham? We have the fast train link to London which is about an hour. Quick look on Rightmove has a couple one bed houses with gardens for £180k

FluffMagnet · 19/11/2020 20:53

Ashford does have the bonus of 3 different train lines into London (HS1, Charing X/London Bridge, Victoria) for those all too frequent train issues.

squashyhat · 19/11/2020 20:54

Tonbridge has an excellent fast rail service to London as several routes converge there. Cheaper than Tunbridge Wells www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/86716927#/

You would definitely get more for your money in Tonbridge plus you benefit from the rail service to/from both Hastings and Ashford. I'm in Tunbridge Wells - I would say it has a nicer feel and there is more going on, but it's expensive. High Brooms is the station that is still TW but slightly further out and the area is TN2 and cheaper, for example:

Thank you so much everyone— would be a tough decision. Just need to go and discover all the vibes/ commuting . Currently renting in Beckenham and I love it , but not affordable to buy ...

Definitely Tonbridge for a quick commute into London. Cheaper houses than TW but not that far away.

notdaddycool · 21/11/2020 09:10

There are some lovely little cottages around The Slade in Tonbridge, east walk to the station.

Fely06 · 23/11/2020 19:12

Much appreciated all! Would you recommend any other areas apart from Kent ? I work in Canary Warf. Im really looking something similar to Beckenham community. Such a shame to move from here
