Can I paint/spray chrome to look like brass?

Just finished a new guest en-suite. I’ve gone for brass fittings. But the builders have connected the glass shower screen to the wall with a chrome bracket, despite me asking them to use brass. They claim they can’t get a brass one for technical reasons.

It’s really irritating me. Is there a product I can use to paint or spray it brass? As it’s for guests it doesn’t get intensive use. Pic attached.

Can you find a brass one? If so, why not replace it yourself?

Otherwise, I'd leave it as is - even if painting looked okay intially (doubtful), it would look worse and worse as the years went by. And don't worry too much, guests can never see the flaws in our houses as much as we do!

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2020 09:19

I’ve asked the builders to replace it. They claim it isn’t available in brass, nor anything that will do the same job. It’s really annoying.

Where did the shower come from?

CrotchetyQuaver · 18/11/2020 09:28

I saw some small pots of rust oleum in various shades in Homebase at the weekend that would be perfect for that job. Otherwise spray paint if you can't get the right shade of gold.

I would be contacting the suppliers and seeing if it came in a brass colour. Bathroom fitters should have double checked that with you.

I would forget the brass and spray it Matt black and it will disappear.

movingonup20 · 18/11/2020 09:36

@7to25

I second, it's hard to colour match, use enamel paint

wineymummy · 18/11/2020 09:48

Google "shower screen arm brass" and lots come up. They're more expensive than chrome so you probably need to buy it yourself but hopefully the builders won't mind replacing it for you (though it is easy to do it yourself.) Also agree that spraying it brass will probably look rubbish, black would be better. You could get car spray paint from Halfords which would be more resilient.

It looks lovely. Anything you do will be short lived/poor finish. Changing the bracket is risky as the mounting centres are unlikely to match. Yreat bathroom by the way.

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2020 09:58

Builders assure me there aren’t any brass ones that will work. I need to go back to them to find out exactly why. I don’t mind paying more - we’ve spent so much on the bloody extension, a shower screen arm is an absolute drop in the ocean.

I can’t remember where the shower itself came from. Dh chose it - he wanted something a bit industrial looking, and found that somewhere obscure.

Yes I feared that. I suspect that’s why the builders say they can’t change it.

Matt black won’t work - the tiles look black in the photo but they’re actually navy blue.

Thanks for the suggestions of paints to try, and for the compliments! I’ll do some more research.

Love the brass.

Builders sometimes just use one catalogue rather than the internet. Can you show them a few you’ve found?
Also black sounds fine too.

Ariela · 18/11/2020 10:43

Matt navy car paint should be readily available in eg Halfords. I'd try that

Could you brass plate it?.

VenusClapTrap · 18/11/2020 13:01

That’s an interesting suggestion, Fluffy. Thanks. I’ll look into that.

As a local sign place as they can cover it in Brass coloured Vinyl

Eng123 · 18/11/2020 22:45

Honestly it looks lovely, don't mess with it! Have a glass of wine and feel around of your new bathroom!

justasecond · 19/11/2020 22:28

It would bother me OP as they are so close together. i just did my shower room in brass fittings and bought a shower screen with a brass bracket so everything matches. We bought our fittings from CP Hart and were struggling to find a douche kit in brass sonthey suggested sending it off to be re-plated to match like a pp suggested. We didn't go for it in the end as we found one to match but worth looking into.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/11/2020 20:30

I suspect the 'technical reason' is one of the following;
technically doesn't matter to us,
technically had one in the van,
technically didn't listen to you,
technically can't be arsed.
technically it's your (client) problem not mine (builder)

VenusClapTrap · 22/11/2020 11:57

Builder is coming round next week to discuss the next phase of work, and is going to look into getting it plated, so we can discuss it then. He knows I’m disappointed about it and that a solution needs to be found.

He is generally very good and not the sort to fob us off. It no doubt helps that we will be starting another major phase of renovation work in the spring though!

More men are colour blind than us, it’s a possibility it doesn’t look that bad but I’m being very generous there.

I doubt his wife would stand for it either.

VenusClapTrap · 27/11/2020 11:55

Update: sprayed it with Hammerite spray paint. Virtually identical colour. It’s worked a treat. Smile
