Mortgage offer expires

DS buying a house. Everything has gone so slowly ( 5 months now) it looks like his mortgage offer might expire before he can complete.
Anyone had experience of this? Do lenders extend or is it back to the drawing board?

You can apply to have the offer extended with some lenders but with others you would have to resubmit documents for a new offer. He should give them a call and ask.

We extended our offer by calling the bank and they had to go through another application (but not as in depth, and no need for a second valuation etc) so it took about a week all in. If our offer had expired before we contacted them they said we would have had to start from scratch

It’s relatively common. My brother and SIL were just asked to provide their last three payslips again and the offer was remade. It’s only usually a problem if your circumstances were likely to change and you were banking on them not doing so before the expiry, and you would no longer meet the mortgage terms.

Our mortgage company wouldn't extend the offer - told our seller that if we didn't complete by the expiry date we'd have to reapply and that could add a delay of months. It focused their minds and we exchanged on the 6 month mark

Thanks, I guess lenders vary.
Good tip about asking for an extension in advance.

Mortgage lenders might be more lenient because of Covid but definitely ring now as they.migjt just add a couple of extra months because of lockdown.
