Calling IKEA hackers!

Hoping to install some tall black units to store shoes in my bedroom. Max depth 30cm & must be 2.4m tall (or thereabouts).

Ideally wanted smoked glass doors so can't fully see the shoes. Can add my own lights and brass handles.

I'm not familiar with IKEA stuff & obviously can't go to the store at the moment. Trying to navigate the website but there's so many items.

Can anyone make some recommendations please? :-)

Re the doors - I'm happy to source elsewhere (where?!) if IKEA don't stock tall glass?

I think your biggest issue with be the depth only being 30cm. Most cupboards / wardrobes will be deeper than that. The good old Billy bookcase range might work for you as that's only 28cm deep, comes in full height and has the option to add glass or solid doors.

Mamette · 11/11/2020 15:21

The pax wardrobe range has a shallow depth option but I think it might be 35cm.

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 11/11/2020 15:22

Agree with emma the Billy is 28cm deep, even the Pax wardrobe is 35cm deep. Anything else is deeper.

Are you looking at it from a DIY point of view? Because you could find doors you want online and pay a joiner to build you exactly what you want in terms of the frame. Then paint it black.

HotChoc10 · 11/11/2020 15:39

The ivar units have 30cm deep cupboards as an option, you could stack a couple of top of each other and paint them black? Would have to source your own doors if you're set on smoked glass as the ones that come with them are just solid wood

RedRedRobinBobbin · 11/11/2020 15:41

Billy bookcase fits all your requirements except the glass is clear. You could add window films to the glass.

Sunisshining12 · 11/11/2020 15:52

28cm deep would be perfect! My OH will put it all together so it can be easily modified if reqd.

Are the Billy doors clear glass? If so, where could I pick up cheap smoked glass doors?

Also, just stumbled across BESTA which seems to be individual frames that can be stacked? At 22cm deep.
38h or 64h options
Available with smoked glass doors.

Although being an odd height may be difficult fitting to ceiling height

@RedRedRobinBobbin - hadn't even thought of window film, great idea!

Seems the Billy bookcase is the best contender? Although, I can't find the matching door for the taller units. I think it's this, but this is only 192cm? www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/oxberg-glass-door-black-brown-30275564/

I'd get frosted window film if I were you, cheaper and dead easy to source.

Sunisshining12 · 11/11/2020 16:22

OH just said we can go up to 35cm deep if we move the door. Not a big job for him. But is it worth it/what would we gain?

I got Billys and sellotaped greaseproof paper in the insides to block the view of crap inside!

On the inside when you open the door it doesn’t look as good as proper window film right enough but could do you for a while while you consider plain or pattered etc.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/11/2020 16:30

There is no glass door to fit the billy with the extension piece on the top. The oxberg is the standard height.

Sunisshining12 · 11/11/2020 19:04

Sorry confused. So there’s no doors for the taller Billy bookcase? Please say there is!!

OP posts:
Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/11/2020 19:39

Sorry, the oxberg door 192cm is only available for the 202cm billy (doesn't go down to floor due to bottom plinth on billy)

You'd have to get the little doors too for the top of the 237cm billy.

@Whatsnewpussyhat - thanks for checking for me. All the names & dimensions are completely frying my brain.

So, to have a Billy Bookcase 2.4m tall - id essentially need a 192 door then another small door on the top to make up the shortfall? Why don’t they just supply a taller door?!

Hmm, not so sure now. What is plan B? Thanks again all

Yep.
Looking at my billy/oxberg, if the doors were larger it would probably be too flimsy or need to be split into 3 panes of glass not 2 affecting the look of it.

They probably wouldn't sell enough to make it viable to produce.

thekoalassocks · 11/11/2020 22:25

I have Eket cabinets that are 25cm deep. Can be wall mounted, I love them!

Rummikub · 11/11/2020 22:35

Plan B could be the shallower pax at 35cm deep with shoe shelves
These are available in full ceiling height (240?)
Range of doors available
But not smoked glass
I love pax- very versatile so you could design the internal fittings to store shoes, bags etc

FrownsAndDimples · 11/11/2020 23:03

Plan B would the the shallower depth pax wardrobes. I have them, they're fab. A range of doors available but not sure if smoked glass.

Sunisshining12 · 12/11/2020 11:11

Thank you all for explaining & clarifying this for me. It was all going over my head!

So theres a few options, will see what will fit the space best & report back with pics!
