Is my space big enough?

We are considering an open plan extension at the back, our original drawings were refused planning for various reasons. We are not allowed to extend to the boundary or more than 3.1m out, this would create a space around 7m wide and 6.5m depth. Would this space be big enough for something similar to the attachment? Does anyone have a similar extension? Does it feel cramped? I just can’t visualise it.

The width should be fine to get your cupboards, a space, the island and then space for your table, don’t know if you would have the depth for a sofa though. Your cupboards will be 600mm deep, you need. Space of 1000mm before your island can start, your island will need to be a minimum of 800mm deep depending on what you want on it, and you need a space of 2.2metres for your table to allow for the chairs to be pulled out. How wide will your island be and how far up will your cupboards go, that will determine if you can manage to fit in a sofa.

That's about a foot each way bigger than our kitchen dining room. It's doable but there's not enough storage in our kitchen, tbh, even with the units in a u shape and a peninsula instead of an island. We ended up buying a massive freestanding larder cupboard to keep in the dining area.

We don't have a utility room mind and I think that would make a bit of difference.

Just focusing on the width for a second, it seems a little cramped to me depending on the depth of island you want and size of table.

So 60cm cabinet, min 90cm to island but ideally more like 120cm. Island width (60cm is skinny to 100cm??). Then need minimum of 90cm but ideally more like 150cm to allow chair to be pulled out from table and for someone to still pass, then table length (200cm?) + Room to pull out chair / walk around (120cm?).
Probably doable but would maybe not feel so generous.
Am by no means an expert but have been looking at sample floorplans to see what's possible for a house we're looking to buy.

That's about a metre longer that our extension and we've got a great big space with two rows of unit along two wall and a 2.4m island. We have a sofa area and table and chairs.

It gives you all the circulation space measurements you need as well. Look at the dining and lounge sections too. Get some graph paper and do a scale drawing with everything you want plus the walkway minimums

I would try and tape it out a bit if you can to check the dimensions.

That space would be around 45sqm and square shaped.
We had a 10sqm smaller square shaped kitchen/ diner and still space to fit a 3- seater sofa (in the middle of the room, not against the wall), bookshelf with tv and a large office desk. Our kitchen was L-shaped though and didn’t have an island.
It should comfortably fit into your space, unless the island, table and corner sofa are overly large. In that case, it might look a bit cramped.

Loose the Island? Lay out the dimensions in your back garden with masking tape and walk around it, put chairs in it to sit and look at the space.

The architect keeps telling me it’s fine, it’s fine, but I just can’t see it. I don’t want to throw more money at it if it won’t work - previous drawings & fees cost around £5000!

We have a big sitting room at the front so this is just as an extra small tv area. I’ll try some of the suggested planners and pegging it out in the garden. I just wish I had more vision.

As others have said with that width it would probably feel a little cramped if set up in that way. I think I'd want to rotate the table, or perhaps have a round one, and put the sofa against the wall (and lose the tv?).

As I've mentioned up thread we gave a room slightly smaller than that and it's not cramped at all.

I'd lose the TV tbh, the noise from the kitchen will be annoying for people watching it and vice versa. Then I'd put the sofa back to the wall facing the garden and you'll have more room for the dining table.

Has the architect drawn it to scale? It’s not magic as it can all be measured and worked out precisely.

I think it’ll fit but it won’t be a massive table. Should comfortably seat 6 but for a big party you’d need to use the dining room or move the sofa and rotate the table to extend it.
