IKEA Pax wardrobes- amazing & easy to build

We finally managed to get a delivery slot and our wardrobe bits arrived on Thursday.

I was going to get someone in to build them for me but my colleague at work told me they're actually easy to do.

So I decided to offer the job to my 17 yr old DS for a £50 fee.

It took him/us about 7 hours to build and he's done a cracking job! Any excuse to use power tools!

We now need a joiner to tweak the doors for us, box in the top and I need to find some knobs/handles as wasn't keen on the IKEA ones.

Honestly it's a doddle to do!

That's just want I have been looking for. How much did it cost and how long did you wait for delivery?

Dongdingdong · 31/10/2020 09:55

It took him/us about 7 hours to build

You say it’s a doddle to build, but it took you seven hours and you now need a joiner to finish it off for you? Confused

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 31/10/2020 11:36

I assume the joiner is because of the space above the wardrobes?
7 hours is what I would need.
.
We have 6 units of the 2,36 m variety, they are simple and took less time. The most problematic part was getting the doors to close correctly as our floors are not even.

SavoyCabbage · 31/10/2020 11:43

That's a lot of wardrobe. They look great!

IKEA aren't good at handles.

BeBraveAndBeKind · 31/10/2020 11:50

They look great. Do you need to screw them into the wall? I love a power tool but our house is victorian with temperamental plaster so I try to avoid drilling.

NotMeNoNo · 31/10/2020 13:36

7 hours is a working day, not unreasonable for a wall of wardrobes.

BG2015 · 31/10/2020 18:34

Never put anything together so big before. We were both novices and learnt as we went.

They whole thing cost £920 plus £40 delivery. So a fraction of what a Sharps or Hammonds built in wardrobe would cost. My friend paid over £3k for smaller built in wardrobes.

We did eat lunch and had a couple of tea breaks too so I think that's good going.

Well done, they look fab

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 31/10/2020 18:40

I love that they can be configured well inside with lots of different options. Great work!

BG2015 · 31/10/2020 20:18

Thank you

This was my plan on the PAX planner! It gives you a shopping list too.

This is brilliant. What power tools did you need?

AmandaHoldensLips · 31/10/2020 20:25

Can we see a photo inside the other side?

user1274157963247 · 31/10/2020 20:28

How did you secure them to the wall?

Rosegardensandgin · 31/10/2020 20:32

Thanks for this. Could be perfect for our house! Interested in any more pics of the inside

BG2015 · 31/10/2020 22:10

You can join them together and fix them to the wall, all the bits are supplied and instructions show you how.

I also watched a guy on YouTube, (he's got a Polish accent ) think he does it for his job and he was really good at explaining how he does it.

You definitely need an electric screwdriver, a drill, small hammer and a normal screwdrivers.

I'll add some photos of the inside tomorrow.

I've got a video on my Instagram too loubyloushome

Long way to go before the room is done but we'll get there.

Knobbles and bobbles do fantastic knobs! I'm going to order some for my ikea furniture.

BG2015 · 01/11/2020 08:47

Fantastic knobs! But a bit pricey!

You don't need a joiner to adjust the doors - you need to fiddle with the hinges. I always forget which screws on them do what, but have a Google. It's really easy to just give them a few turns and get them hanging right.

cheesecake864 · 01/11/2020 09:41

We love Ikea furniture, and find it so easy to assemble. My husband has done all our Ikea assembling over the years until we bought the furniture for our two boys and I assembled a everything thing on my own, shelfs, drawers, desks x 2 was so straightforward

cheesecake864 · 01/11/2020 09:42

Also love your wardrobes and want to get some exactly like that too !

Jijithecat · 01/11/2020 09:46

We love our Pax wardrobes. People always think they are built in yet cost a fraction of the price.

BG2015 · 01/11/2020 11:31

Totally agree. I built 2 Malm bedside cabinets and a 4 drawer chest of drawers yesterday and it was easy.

I think although flat pack it's fairly solid stuff. Definitely the better end of flat pack furniture

We had those wardrobes - same doors as well - in our last house @BG2015 - I really miss them. I didn’t like any of the Ikea handles either and, as we only had a small gap at the top that wasn’t worth boxing in, I just used to open them by holding the top of the door. Decided I liked the look without handles.

You and DS have done a great job. I could never have got that done in seven hours - or, indeed, in any multiple of seven hours (not much of a DIY-er I’m afraid 😊)
