Cost of full packing removals in London

Hi,

Just wondered if people could share the quotes they've had recently for full packing removal.

We are moving from a 2 bed flat (approx 500 square feet) on the first floor to a four bed house only a few miles away (15 minute drive). Filled in a form with all the stuff listed that needed removing and also what needed taking down and rebuilt in the new house.

Got sent an estimate for £800 the other day by a firm who came round to look at the property today. The final quote has come back at £2300!!! I asked for it without the packing and still come back at £1500.

I moved two years ago from a 2 bed flat to a 2 bed flat with all packing (although no furniture other than a table and chairs) and it cost me £500. My sister moved from a three bed house with two kids three years ago and hers came in at £1400

Am i going mad or this a normal quote these days

Call www.dmremovals.co.uk . Very cheap and reasonable

NewHouseNewMe · 30/10/2020 12:42

I've allowed £3000 for full packing service (5 bed) but haven't actually had any quotes yet. I'll be interested to see what others say.

Hmmm £800 (as part of your £2300 quote) for full packing on a two bed flat seems steep.

We moved 6 years ago, mind, but full packing on a 4 bed house to a 5 bed house 20 mins away was £2300. If I remember correctly the actual packing part was only around £300. But as I said that was a while back.

Bells3032 · 30/10/2020 14:20

the original estimate was 800 for everything but the quote after seeing things was 1700 for the packing and then extra for the furniture, insurance, this fee and that fee

I would get quite a few more quotes. Sounds like that company give a massive underestimate to hook you in...

LaurieFairyCake · 30/10/2020 14:51

I paid £4K for removals 4 years ago - 4 bed house to similar square footage

Smallgoon · 30/10/2020 15:30

Can't you just hire a van and do it yourself? You could always pay a labourer for a couple of hours work to help with heavy stuff.

Mumbum2011 · 30/10/2020 17:31

We had quotes ranging from 2.3k-5.5k. We're moving to another part of the UK travelling via via boat and the final cost of 3bed house is 2.7k. Including a fragile packing service.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 30/10/2020 22:04

We paid about 2.5k for a 4 bedroom house earlier this year. This included the full packing service and was done by a reputable local company. SE London

I’ve had quotes recently for packing and moving a 3 bed semi plus garage - all were between £1200 and £1800. Just outside London. Packing was around £300 of the total cost.

bicyclesandbeyond · 30/10/2020 22:38

We've just moved from a 2 bed flat in zone 2 to a 3 bed house 1 hour away out of London. We paid £350 for a day of packing (2 men) + £250 for packing materials (boxes etc) + £1100 for the actual move (3 men, 2 vans). Total £1700. It's a painful cost of moving!

bicyclesandbeyond · 30/10/2020 22:39

The packing service was worth every single penny btw!

newmum0808 · 31/10/2020 07:26

I've just had a quote to move from a four bed semi (2000 square feet) to a house five minutes away. £1800 (including vat) plus an additional £480 (including vat) for the packing service. We're in zone 4.

NewHouseNewMe · 31/10/2020 13:25

@bicyclesandbeyond How do they pack up clothes in cupboards? Do we need to put them in suitcases first?

NewHouseNewMe · 31/10/2020 13:27

@newmum0808 is that north or south London?

Foxy85 · 31/10/2020 13:32

We moved from a 2 bed ground floor flat in zone 2 to a 5bed in zone 4 SE London. Cost was about £1200 for everything. This was 2weeks ago.

MyCatReallyIsAGit · 31/10/2020 13:32

We paid about £1100 from a 2 bed first floor flat with a LOT of books (as in, a four-figure number) to a 3 bed house 3 years ago. From NE London (Zone 3) to Home Counties. That included packing.

They left clothes in drawers and wardrobes and just carried those onto the van!

newmum0808 · 31/10/2020 14:24

North east x

LBOCS2 · 31/10/2020 17:19

We did a move in SE London last year - 800sq ft property, pack and move a mile up the road. We paid just under £1k.

hgaj · 31/10/2020 18:46

Yes I paid £1100 for a similar move £250 of which was for packing.

PeachandBee · 31/10/2020 21:15

Moved last month, 3 bed terrace to 5 bed semi 3 miles apart. £1800 for full service including waiting fee waiver, but we had already packed a significant amount ourselves. The cost made my cheapskate heart wince but they turned out to be invaluable and I've recommended the company to 2 other people already!

bicyclesandbeyond · 01/11/2020 19:12

@NewHouseNewMe sorry only just spotted your question! I packed my underwear in a suitcase because I felt a bit weird about them doing that. But they did everything else and packed all our clothes themselves in special wardrobe boxes. If you want to save a bit of money on packing materials they you can obviously fill any suitcases you have in advance.

McGolmez · 03/11/2020 10:27

We just moved on Friday from a 1 bed flat to a 4 bed house - we did it ourselves and we will NEVER do it ourselves again. NEVER. It was significantly cheaper to do it ourselves but it was not worth the stress - most removal firms dismantle and reassemble your furniture, bedframes etc etc and that alone would have sped up the whole process. We have an 18month old toddler too which made it all even more stressful as he was so fed up of us packing and the place being topsy turvy - so in summary I think it's worth every penny to hire in a company of you can - good luck!
