How much for internal remodel?

Obviously a bit of a piece of spring question but we are debating different houses we could buy.

To suit us, House A would need a fairly standard small single storey infill extension connecting two existing rooms.

House B needs a lot of the internal walls on the ground floor knocked down and rearranging, and a garage conversion.

Is one likely to cost a lot more than the other?

We have done two different major house renovations over the years

One was converting a long double length garage into two rooms, knocking through to the house to include the conversion into the house and build a new (Internal access) garage to the front of the former double length garage

We have, in another house, also knock down walls, put in steels, moved kitchen from one side of the house to the other

The internal renovation was far, far more money and much more time consuming.

However, the increase in the value of the second home warranted this due to it being detached, better road, larger plot to begin with.

You need to consider the end value of the house too when deciding which house and which project.

As @ILoveYoga says an internal remodel can be surprisingly expensive, particularly if the remodel involves moving a kitchen- in a previous house we looked at simply moving the sink and hob to a different location whilst fitting a new kitchen but ruled it out on cost as we weren't planning to stay there long- I seem to remember that alone was going to add a couple of thousand to the spend. If the walls you are planning to take out are load bearing this is likely to cost a four figure sum, depending on where you are in the country. Remember as well if you are knocking down walls and rearranging rooms you are likely to need rewiring, plastering, redecorating and re-carpeting as well. Obviously you've got to think about what suits your needs and how long you plan to stay there, but personally I would be wary of House B unless I could get it for a very good price.
