Gurgling noises & bad smell from the kitchen sink when using the dishwasher

I’m got a problem with a gurgling plughole and I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what to do? I have double sinks In the kitchen and when I have the dishwasher on, there’s lots of gurgling coming out of the plug hole on one of the sinks (always the same sink) And sometimes an awful smell. Water drains well in this sink, although I don’t use it very often as it’s used mainly as a draining board. The other sink seems fine. This only happens when the dishwasher is on and all other sinks in the house & loos seem ok. Does anyone have an idea what could be causing this and how to fix it? Thanks!

Has it always been the case or is this something new?

Does your plumbing look like this? ibb.co/BZWHgdB

I expect the waste hose from the dwr has been incorrectly positioned.

Please post a photo of your layout, equivalent to the one Toby posted.

Thanks both.

It is a recent problem. We had the kitchen fitted 3 years ago. It’s a double sink (well, two single sinks side by side) and it’s the sink in the first picture that gurgles. The second picture is from under the other sink (which is right next to the dishwasher ) and this one doesn’t seem to have any problems.

And here’s a picture from under the other sink, which isn’t having any problems. This sink is right next to the dishwasher & looking at it, it looks like the dishwasher drains into this one- but this sink doesn’t gurgle....

Can you stand back and take a pic that shows them both, and the pipe between them please.

And the pipe that goes away to the drain (you may need to move stuff out of the way)

Also, the sink waste without the dishwasher hose has a grey spigot coming out of it, pointing diagonally upwards. Can you poke your finger into it?

Thanks PigletJohn

The grey spigot has a cap on it and I can’t get it off. Is it supposed to just pull off? I don’t want to force it too much...

And here’s a picture of both sinks.

Thanks again!

No, the spigot should be sealed, that's OK

The pipe layout seems correct, but it's possible there is an obstruction further along the waste pipe, or an air pocket.

Look at the dishwasher waste hose. It should loop up so the top of the loop is as high as the worktop.

When you fill a sink and pull out the plug, does the water run away briskly?

ThisOneNoThatOne · 23/10/2020 19:33

I wouldn’t say the top of the loop is as high as the worktop, it comes to about half way up the sink.

& yes, the water flows freely.

Thanks

Ours is the same ( gurgling) I think it’s because the dishwasher pipe goes into the waste before the u bend , the last house had it after the bend with no problems, when we have a new kitchen I’ll change it .

I think it would be better if you had it going in to the grey socket further down.

Chumleymouse · 23/10/2020 20:14

Ah sorry I’m looking at the overflow pipe

hthhthhth · 23/10/2020 20:21

We had this exact thing and it got to the stage where water would bubble up through the plug hole then back in again when the washing machine was on. Just poured some sink unblocker in overnight and never had the problem again. No clue how or why the two are connected or why the cleaner solved the problem.

You have a build up of grease and sludge in your pipes, it builds up over time, try some foaming sink unblocker or worst case you’ll (plumber) need to dismantle the traps and clean out the pipes

ThisOneNoThatOne · 23/10/2020 21:29

Thanks all. I’ve already tried a sink unblocker, but it wasn’t a foaming one, so I’ll get some of that.

Have you checked the traps / u bends? Usually just a build up or slight blockage there and simple enough to clean out.
