Which is the best room to have a garden view?

Looking at moving soon and a lot of houses either have an open plan kitchen/diner/living space, or could do with an extension for such a space. How do you decide which bit has the garden views? (Presuming a space is not so wide as to allow all 3) Do you like to have a view from the sink? Would you place the dining table with the view? Or would a comfy seating section be nice to admire the garden? What would you have/do you have?

I know everyone will have a different opinion on this but I love to sit at the kitchen table working at my laptop and looking out at the garden. We've got a home office, but I still prefer to sit there to work because of the view:)

That sounds lovely, a view from your desk is great, maybe I need to also plan the home office space in said new house!

Kitchen & dining room and also home office

Not where you watch TV

That is interesting as that is what I see a lot of. In my current house we only have a view from our living room and I can’t say I miss it from the other rooms, but then I’ve never had kitchen or dining with a view in any house I’ve lived in so how would I know!

I'd say the kitchen and dining room, and also a door straight from the kitchen or utility room to the garden.

Our back garden view is from the dining room, which we have converted into a snug with bookshelves, etc. We have a pretty front garden which we can see from the kitchen. I love to sit in the snug in the afternoon to read, and look at the garden.

Kitchen/ dining. I spend most of my day in there looking out the bifiolds at the garden. I only sit in the living room did maybe 1 hour each day. Depends how you use your house really.

I enjoy looking out at the garden while waiting for kettle to boil, so kitchen sounds good to me for that reason...

Lots of different thoughts then, hard to know unless you’ve experienced the different options I guess!

I prefer houses with the living room opening up onto the garden, but this may also be because that's what I'm used to. I also spend more time in the living room than at the dining table. I'm looking at houses at the moment so it's something I've thought about a few times. I keep wondering why so few of the houses I've seen have a living room joining the garden, but having read other people's comments it's making more sense to me now.

AntiqueCarpet · 13/10/2020 18:00

Same here exactly Isthisanokname Need to work out if we spend most of our time in the living room because it has a view, and whether that would change if a different room had the view.

I’ve got garden views from 4 rooms but my favourite to sit in is the garden room. We just like to lounge around on the sofas and chat or play with DS who’s got some toys there too.
I’m not much of a kitchen person so don’t spend time there unless I need to cook something even though it’s a lovely big room that opens onto the garden.
So I’d definitely go with a living area at the back of the house.

Roselilly36 · 13/10/2020 18:52

Lounge definitely, the room you spend most daylight hours in. We are looking to buy a bungalow, thank goodness for floor plans, amazing how many gardens can only be seen from the bedroom. I don’t want a lounge that overlooks the street.

XingMing · 13/10/2020 20:31

I would say, from the very privileged position of a person who has lovely views all along one side of the house, that garden views shouldn't be wasted on bedrooms. But I wake up to a glorious view (or a downpour that completely obscures all visibility equally often) and that is a great start to my day. I think the garden/best view should be for the room in which you will spend the most daytime hours logically.

Pipandmum · 13/10/2020 20:41

I only cook at night so don't need a view. I spend my days in the garden room as it's the brightest - it has a sofa but I sit at a small table there where I can lay out my papers.
I'd go for the living room next to the garden, but if open plan you could see the garden from every section.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 13/10/2020 21:37

I always think the lounge should be at the back of the house for privacy. And the sink under the kitchen window at the front for being nosey while doing the washing up Grin

copperoliver · 13/10/2020 22:43

Kitchen or front room depending on where you spend most of your time. X
