Building work support thread

I just wanted to vent really about the last 9 months of building work and wondered if anyone wants to join me in expressing frustrations with builders, delays and mess.

We have been building a two storey extension since February. The builder's original estimate for completion was 12 weeks. I thought that sounded a bit optimistic so I allowed for 6 months. It has now been 8 months and we still do not have a functioning kitchen and lots of work left to do.

The whole process has been so much more stressful than I imagined. The first problem was the builders building it smaller than our plans and us not realising until it was too late to rectify. We have also had numerous supply issue with windows, steels etc due to covid, issues employing subcontactors for the elements not covered by the main contractor and subcontractors blaming each other for things.

In just the last 2 days I have had to deal with

  • plumbers breaking an antique glass lamp
  • plumbers incorrectly commissioning the underfloor heating by turning up to max risking cracking the tiles
  • worktop templaters putting the tap hole in the wrong place so tap does not fit by sink despite giving them the tap to do the template
  • electrician failing to turn up when agreed with knock on effects for 3 other trades I have arranged this week

It just feels never ending and I am wondering if this is others experience of extensions. Our builder got excellent reviews (including from a neighbour) so I am wondering if this experience is normal.

I am fed up having to stop my 11 month old from crawling in piles of dirt and washing up in the downstairs cloakroom and just want all the builders to disappear and leave us in peace.
