Asbestos surveys

Recently had a survey done on a house I’m buying, built about 1982-3. The surveyor says I need to get an asbestos survey done as the house is more than 20 years old and needs quite a lot of repairs. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m pretty stunned, tbh. Wasn’t expecting to potentially have to pay for a new roof.

Surveyors say all sorts of things, did they say why he recommends an asbestos survey? Age in itself isn't a good reason but if he's seen material he thinks is asbestos then that's a good reason. What is it that seems to be the issue and ehat's the surveys got to do with the roof?

If the survey has picked up likes asbestos-containing materials which have already been damaged or disturbed and the property is in need of remedial works which are going to require disturbing potential asbestos then a full asbestos survey is wise. It will give you better idea at this stage of the extent of professional removal you may need and whether it would be prohibitively costly for you.

If there are, for example, old floor tiles containing asbestos concealed under floor coverings, you can’t just rip the floors up yourself but will need a specialist company. Same goes for aertex ceilings.
