I live alone in cottage in a village; the problem is I am concerned to have workmen come to my home; In the past they have trudged into my home to give estimates, I felt very insecure particularly when it was myself and a toddler in the house alone. They often did work that was below standard, but I was not strong enough to stand up to them and hence over the years, many areas of maintenance have fallen behind, as I do not feel safe calling persons whom I do not know. (My son has now left for Uni); And I need to have the holes in the roof plugged up... any suggestions on what I can do would be much appreciated.....

Ask friends and neighbours if they can recommend someone - preferably someone they have used and are happy with. It sounds like a handyman type job rather than a builder.

Same as pp- look for recommendations.

If you feel insecure about being alone in the house alone with them, ask a friend or family member to come over while they’re there?

The local council may have a list of approved tradesmen

Thank you kindly all; I will definitely consider your responses.....I’m a very private person...and family find it very hard to come out of London .....even before Covid-19.....
