Boiler - am I being stupid?

Hello all!

I am in a bit of a pickle trying to get my central heating to work. Normally I am pretty good at practical things but this has got me stumped.

Tried to use it for the first time since March, but no joy. I moved in in March and remember it was a bugger to figure out last time I used it. Does anyone have a similar setup and can advise? Maybe I’m just being stupid.....

The glow worm thingy downstairs is on for both heat and hw. Thermostat downstairs is set to 20 deg. And the control panel upstairs is set to be one advance boost and the green light is on. So should be working, but no heat and no gas being used. Hot water is working, but not heating.

Any ideas what I’m doing wrong? Got a log burner so keeping warm that way for now til I figure this out.

Please help! Smile

I'd initially turn up the thermostat to rule out it already being at temperature/ hear if it clicks to trigger the heating.

Don't know what the first picture is as I can't see what the screen says
You have boosted both hot water and Heating?

NachoNachoMan · 04/10/2020 10:32

It might already be 20 degrees in your house so it isn't coming on as it at temperature already. Turn the thermostat. Does it 'click' at all? You might just need it on a bit higher.

Our house felt cold the other day but it said it was 21.5 already so had to put it up to 23 to actually get some decent radiator heat!

Cross post with @hedgehoglurker!

FrostyGirl66 · 04/10/2020 10:34

Yeah I agree. Your house probably is already 20 or above. Put the thermostat to 30 just to see if it turns on.

The little tap thing on the boiler itself means that the boiler doesn't have enough pressure. You need to find the inlet taps underneath the cover on the bottom to refill it for it to work.

dementedpixie · 04/10/2020 10:39

Not all boilers have a tap thing. Mine doesn't as its not a combi boiler

dementedpixie · 04/10/2020 10:44

Do you have the make/model of your boiler and then you can Google instructions

madcatladyforever · 04/10/2020 10:45

I can't work mine out either and I have a science degree. You need to be a fecking rocket scientist these days to work out those mothers. I have lost the will to live.

BluebellsGreenbells · 04/10/2020 10:45

The third picture has them as OFF they need to be on timed or on

dementedpixie · 04/10/2020 10:47

No, she has pressed the boost button so that overrides any timers - that's why the lights are lit up beside the boost button

dementedpixie · 04/10/2020 10:49

And its why she has hot water even though it would normally be switched off according to the control panel - Boost button means you can switch it on when required

Femaleinvestor · 04/10/2020 11:05

Don’t worry!!! I figured it out! Both the HW and CH have to be “on” for it to work. Getting toasty now. Thanks for the comments! Why are boilers so so complicated. Haha.

That means your timer/programmer is set to "gravity hot water" (there is a switch on the back where the heat to the cylinder is not pumped.

In an old system, that might be correct. But your boiler looks fairly modern.

Either ask the engineer next time you have the boiler serviced, or photograph the pipes and other items around your hot water cylinder, especially those with cables going into them, and I can probably puzzle it out.

it is better to have a fully pumped system, as this will heat the cylinder quicker and be more economical, but this involves plumbing changes and a cost.

However, if you are lucky and it is just the switch on the back, this is a trivial change.
