Bringing family up in an inner city flat...

Our narrative at home has always been that we need to move out of our flat to a house once the kids are a few years from secondary school for more space. That time is kind of now. We are in zone 2 near lovely parks, swimming pools, theatres, quick bus into central London and lots of other amenities. We just can't decide on an area of north London we like enough and can afford (900k max) and just love our current location so much.

Anyone have positive stories about bringing older kids up in flats? The kids were sharing a bedroom but we have rearranged so our small reception room is now bedroom 3 and the kitchen diner which is quite big has become our living room too. We don't feel cramped though and have clever storage and beginning to think is it worth the upheaval of moving schools etc for an extra bedroom and a bit more living space?! We want an extra bedroom mainly so friends and family can stay but that's all we need it for really. We would downsize again if we did move once the kids leave home.

We have a garden and over lockdown we spent a lot of time in there putting new decking down and in the summer it really is like having an extra room.

I think we are beginning to doubt whether we actually want to move! I know many people live in high rises etc and apartment living is just how it is for many but I guess the thing is we have a choice here. We could move to zone 4 or 5 and get a nice house but be in the suburbs really without the which we aren't sure we want! In an ideal world we would be able to afford a house here but they are 1.2 million for 3 bedroom terraces which don't actually provide much more space....1.3 million for 4 bedrooms...

We felt a bit cramped and on top of each other over lockdown but now things are a bit more normal we are often out and about and home is more of a base which is what has always kept us here.

Any thoughts and positive stories welcome!

@goteam it does strike me that you may feel pressured into have a lifestyle that others have that you think you ought to have and indeed WANT.

Your preference for city centre living is absolutely valid!!

Some people want rural life with no neighbours and ferrying their DC around for decades.

We live 1.5 miles from our town centre, we have an amazing view, very quiet street, fab bus service, easy for work BUT we would do more stuff/go out more if it was on our doorstep!!!

I think your preferred lifestyle is compatible with living in a flat and you will be happy.

We moved to a much larger home and we sit in the kitchen family room same size as our old downstairs to the extent that we gave over the separate lounge to being a bedroom because it so rarely got used!

The DC use outside for sunbathing plus storing bikes and the dog nips out when desperate. when they were little our old small garden got used loads but by pre-teens they needed the park for Footie etc.

3 of them have decentish single bedrooms and it's fine.

If you are desperate for more space in a few years time look at renting.

Maybe that's it @RandomMess but it is hard to know a 6 and 9 year old will want in 5 years...I feel that if we move it has to be before secondary.

Same thing here with the lounge becoming a bedroom. We just have the one large open plan family space now but it seems fine at the moment.

They won't know any different though!!

I have parental guilt about relocating mine however they don't ever think about how their life would have been had we not moved 🤷🏽‍♀️ I have asked them but nope the answer I get "what's the point of thinking about it".

That Leytonstone house is gorgeous!

Stinginthetail · 08/10/2020 10:59

Another Leytonstone gem under £900k

'Upper Leytonstone' is another nice part and easy to walk to both Wanstead and Walthamstow.

goteam · 08/10/2020 11:05

Oh my goodness that Leytonstone house! See I think we are all set here in our little zone 2 flat then I see that for just 200k more than our flat is worth and think we would be mad not to move out a bit!

goteam I'm not sure why you feel the need to move when you have enough space and are near everything you want to be. Much as I agree with you about that Leytonstone house do you want to be saddled with a larger mortgage when things look dicey re jobs etc?

RandomMess · 08/10/2020 11:17

But £200k is still a lot of extra mortgage plus increased council tax?

Plus cleaning...

monkeygoesbananas · 08/10/2020 12:01

and in addition - and I am not being negative about Leytonstone - but will you have to move to Wanstead to get to secondary schools. My feeling is that at the moment people move to Leytonstone pre-kids/babies and then move to Wanstead for secondaries. So you might have to move there instead.

not true monkey. I live in Leytonstone and both my kids go to wanstead high school. We're in the catchment for Wanstead High here. They went to primary in Wanstead too and none of this is because the schools aren't as good in Leytonstone but because I sent them to a faith primary school of which that was my parish. I have lots of friends whose kids go to Leytonstone secondary and that's good too.
monkeygoesbananas · 08/10/2020 12:27

@Stinginthetail - I stand corrected! Sorry - wasnt sure if all kids got into Wasnstead High. A few of my friends had moved for those reasons hence why I thought that

goteam · 08/10/2020 13:14

Good to know about the schools in Leytonstone and Wanstead.

@RandomMess yeah the extra cleaning isn't appealing. Luckily we can afford up to about 900k but it's just do we want the upheaval and do we want to stay here and if we spend up to that amount moving locally for a bit more space is that actually worth it?! Still not sure!

If you've got good neighbours and a garden I would stay. Being in zone 2 will be amazing for teenagers! I was partly raised in a flat in Berlin and it was amazing. I love one floor living!
