Is plaster shortage a thing?

Just that really. I'm getting some work done atm but have been told the ceiling can't be done due to no plaster being available. Is this true or am a being spun a yarn ?

True according to my friend who's husband is a plasterer. Well it was true a few weeks/month ago anyway . And if he could get it it was costing lots!

SellFridges · 29/09/2020 21:12

Yep. It’s like the building trade’s version of bog roll.

Thewindsofchange · 29/09/2020 21:13

There was nothing for months. It's slowly trickling in now. We managed to get about 12 bags a month or so ago.

Subordinateclause · 29/09/2020 21:13

In the first lockdown it was almost impossible to get hold of. What's usually a few pounds a bag was going for 40 or 50 quid. Not heard about it recently but could well believe it.

ladykuga · 29/09/2020 21:16

I was told this very recently by my plasterer. I was advised to try local timber merchants. It was piled high with the stuff when I got there. Don't bother trying to buy online.

jdoejnr1 · 29/09/2020 21:17

It was, starting to ease off a bit now depending in where you are though.

Flatpackback · 29/09/2020 21:17

That's great thanks all for your replies. I thought it was perhaps that they couldn't be bothered plastering the ceiling but they seem a good team & are doing a great job so I'm pleased to hear it's true. I'm still stuck with a hideous artex ceiling though.

It certainly was not so sure what its like now

wheresmymojo · 29/09/2020 21:18

May be in certain areas?

We just had our garage ceiling plastered for normal price and hardly any wait in the South East (Hants)

Watto1 · 29/09/2020 21:19

I work in a Builders Merchant. It was certainly true a few weeks ago but we are getting some stock in now. It’s the luck of the draw if we have any on any given day.

Mamette · 29/09/2020 21:48

I'm still stuck with a hideous artex ceiling though.

I’d smell a rat tbh, are they saying they won’t do the ceiling at all? Or just there will be a delay?

UnconsideredTrifles · 29/09/2020 22:35

Can confirm that there was a severe shortage here (Cardiff) but there's plenty now - it might be regional?

CurlyStrawsRock · 29/09/2020 23:25

It was true but not sure if it is now. I did a two hour round trip just to get some when it came up on the wickes stock finder!

Slightlydustcovered · 30/09/2020 08:24

There were shortages a few weeks ago but we can get it here quite easily now. ( Berkshire)

LBOCS2 · 30/09/2020 08:40

Yep, we've been doing a big project at work and it has looked TERRIBLE throughout as we've not been able to plaster. Skimming starts tomorrow as we've finally got enough to get going on it!

PleasantVille · 30/09/2020 08:43

I know nothing about building but I know there's a shortage because I've seen threads on here, it's not just parenting you can learn about on MN Grin

MissPollyPops · 30/09/2020 19:24

I was told that by a joiner a couple of months ago. That there was a shortage and the price had tripled.

Sorryusernamealreadyexists · 30/09/2020 20:17

Husband is a plasterer. Through lockdown the factory completely shut and there was a full shortage, now I think people are buying extra and creating a shortage (a bit like bog roll) although it does have a use by date so that would be pretty stupid Confused
