Stopping cold air coming down chimney?

I have a fire place that is no longer used, in the cold weather I feel a draught coming down the chimney and making the room cold.
Can anyone recommend a solution to stop the draught please?

Sounds like you need one of these.

We stuck a cardboard box up as a temporary solution - it worked so we left it there.

Removed on Christmas Eve, obviously Grin

Or shove an old blanket up it.
Please just remember to remove anything you do out your there before lighting a fire. !

i made a "curtain" out of an old duvet covered in black fabric which I huung on hooks inside the chimney. You cant see it from the front but it effectively blocks the hole. This was with a huge chimney hole, like an inglenook type size, and the chimney baloon just wouldnt fit. It was a huge faff but worth it.

We wad up a big ball of bubble wrap. It is called The Chimney Tampon!

We had an inflatable thing for one of our chimneys bit it was crap. An old pillow worked much better.

Chimney balloon for us too

I used to stuff a black plastic sack with scrunched up newspaper, squeeze it into the chimney and make sure the string of the bag was facing downwards for ease of removal. Your chimney tampon description is great, that's exactly what it is!

We put an old pillow in a bin bag, sucked the air out with the vacuum then shoved it up and let the air swell it back up. Works a treat. Dh takes it out in summer and put it back about this time of year.

Africa2go · 29/09/2020 09:21

We just stuffed a large cushion up it.
