Restoring oak beams

I'm buying an old Georgian cottage and it's got a random assortment of beams, some black, some painted light turd brown. I'd like to clean them all up but I'm a bit worried about damaging them.

  1. Has anyone done ice blasting? How much did it cost? Is it safe?
  2. What else should I look at?

One of the beams is basically a tree trunk (so I wouldn't want to sand them) and I'm pretty sure there's some toxic crap lurking anyway. Is there something else I should be doing -- I ask because I can't find any mention of ice blasting on the period house type sites.

I'm quite skint so can't undertake some grand endeavour!
