Stone veneers

Has anyone built or renovated a house then cladded it in stone veneer?

I much prefer a veneer over a render - actually, I’d much prefer a stone house but a girl can’t have everything - but I’d like to have a veneer that doesn’t stand out too much from the area that I live in.

How do I go about choosing? Is it just a matter of balancing design with personal taste and cost? Will planning departments be fussy?

Is it really expensive?

I also need to make a decision about windows and despite fanatically looking at Pinterest and renovation magazines, I'm at a loss.

I like the sage green windows but have to factor in a bifold too - does sage green work on bifolds? Will it date?

Not sure about the aluminium grey neither - quite industrial to me.
