Where to live in Sheffield

Hi,

I am not from Sheffield and I am planning on buying a house here with my boyfriend. However, due to neither of us being from here we are not sure as to which are the best areas. This will be our first house so we are looking at houses in the region of £200,000 to £250,000. We know we like quite a few areas near the peaks side of Sheffield but not as keen on places like Woodhouse. I was wondering if anyone who knows the area could give me some suggestions. I want to make sure I am buying something in a reasonably nice place but I know the peaks side can be quite expensive.

I will really appreciate any responses. Thankyou in advance. Smile

The cafes are principally on South Road - Joespresso is my favourite though Gerry's is fab, as is the (relatively new) Aesthete.

Rivelin Park cafe is also lovely (massive scones), and some of the pubs in the lower part of Walkley are good for craft beers and tapas-type food. I like the Blind Monkey and the Raven Inn.

What you've got to remember is that even if you bought in Lower Walkley, like the house I posted, you're only a very short walk from South Road, while also being close to Rivelin and Loxley valleys for walks/runs/bike rides. And handy for Hillsborough for the tram.

Hillsborough also has some good cafes and craft beer places these days - it's far nicer than it used to be.

CatAndHisKit · 29/09/2020 21:01

thank you for that info, fell, much appreciated! I'm a lover of good scones Grin
I did see the places on South Rd, though it was very quiet when I was there, nothing like Crookes (High St). Didn't have time to stop though.
So what would you call Hillsborough - google says that house is in there. Re cafes in Hillsborough - I only saw the usual chain around hte shopping centre, and a Costa the other end past the park (Middlewood rd), the nice one you mentioned, wher would they be?
Yes, I'm def looking at Hillsborough now as I realised it's a very quick bus ride to Crookes / Bolehill etc, South Rd (walking very hilly though!)

CatAndHisKit · 29/09/2020 21:01

*nice ones

fellrunner83 · 29/09/2020 21:36

That house definitely isn't Hillsborough - it's lower Walkley. Not that it really matters! Hillsborough is lower down the hill and further North, on and around Middlewood Road and by the park/football stadium. Good places there include Boo coffee shop, on Middlewood Road, and also the newish craft beer places on the same stretch. It's not as "nice" as South Road or Crookes high street, but is more convenient for getting in and out of town because of the tram. I wouldn't rely on getting buses to and from Crookes from Hillsborough though, as the 52 service is...not good!

CatAndHisKit · 29/09/2020 21:43

haha I thought 52 is very good - every 10min! But 52a is not so great (that actually goes all the way to HIllsb) - the tram wasn't working last Saturday due to rail works so everyone packed on the 52a from the centre and it went past without stopping at Crookes where I was waiting for 25min! But generally it's doable if you are just going for some relaxed time on an afternoon - rather than viewing houses haha.
Thanks for Middlewood suggestions - google should amend their area markings! According to them Lower W is by the Bolehill. Locals know better!

SayWhatTheWhatNow · 29/09/2020 22:05

Penistone is a Sheffield postcode (S36) but a Barnsley telephone area code

fellrunner83 · 30/09/2020 07:36

Yeah, Google has some very odd markings on! The bit they call Lower Walkley is still Walkley, but more Rivelin to locals. Very nice round there too, but a longer and steeper walk to shops, pubs, etc.

The 52a/52 saga is an ongoing headache for Walkley councillors and locals. It's allegedly every 10 min, but often misses, or is full - esp in term time when students fill it up in Broomhill and Crookes. If you do move here you'll probably start using either the tram or the 95 instead, as the 52 is so awful! Where abouts are you viewing?

CatAndHisKit · 30/09/2020 19:50

fell viewing justin those areas mentioned - Walkley, HIllsborough, saw one in Crookes. But occasionally look at other areas. I liked one in Sharrow but unsure as people here seem to be saying it's a bit 'dabgerous'. It's no cheaper than Walkley ones but a lot less competition!
Btw is Beighton no good (nearer Rother valley)? seems nice on google, green, and some nice slightly cheaper houses for sale but I'm assuming it's a long hike to centre/station even by tram.

CatAndHisKit · 30/09/2020 19:54

I have offered on one in what you say in Lower W but they did get a higher offer at asking price (and other offers but I think in line with mine) and no decision yet - I don't need a mortgage so a small chance they may go for that but obvs they aer in no rush and want a higher price ideally.
It's just a headache atm - not sure if worth renting and waiting for prices to drop, but who knows. Just too many buyers around atm.

CatAndHisKit · 30/09/2020 19:55

*what you say is (and I now call it the same!)

mumof2kiddo · 25/03/2021 13:35

Hello there,
Currently,We are living in London but now we are thinking about Sheffield to move.
So could anyone here help me to know about outstand and good schools both secondary and primary school.
And 1 more thing to mention what if we apply for secondary school (year7 ) for this year September 2021 .
I would be very grateful for any advise.
Thanks in Advance.

SilverLiningSearching · 25/03/2021 22:41

If you’re interested in the Peaks side, you could look at Crosspool. Very pleasant with a decent clutch of local shops, and handy for town and countryside.

Campbell14 · 19/01/2022 16:29

Hi there,

Bit late to these msgs/topic but hoping you guys can help on areas to move to in Sheffield? My husband and I are looking to leave London by summer time and looking at potential areas in Sheffield that has a good community/neighbourhood, accessible to main roads and affordable living costs. We are looking at 3-4 bedroom house.

Been through Rightmove and S6 seems to have houses that we are looking for, but no idea what the area is like.

Thank you for any advice you can give.

Fernyfloor · 19/01/2022 17:10

S6 is a big postcode covering a large area. You'll need to be more specific. Do you need to consider schools as that might affect the parts you are recommended.

Campbell14 · 19/01/2022 17:36

@Fernyfloor
Thank you for your reply. No school to consider at the moment. I've seem some properties in Loxley.

Fernyfloor · 19/01/2022 17:56

I don't know Loxley very well only to pass through. I personally like it, quite on the edge of Sheffield with some properties having amazing views. You could go walking/cycling from your doorstep if that's your thing. Wadsley common isn't far and I love the walks along Rivelin.

It's a short drive to Hillsborough which has quite a few shops like Boots, Wilkinsons, home bargains and B&M. Also you could easily use the park and ride at Malin Bridge to get the tram into Sheffield. If going more rural you're a short drive from either high or low bradfield. Both are lovely with great walks and pubs. You would also be a short drive from our cow Molly in Dungworth which makes amazing ice cream.

Campbell14 · 19/01/2022 18:06

@Fernyfloor thank you for your advice. Do you have any thoughts on Fox Hill Road? North of Sheffield.

RampantIvy · 19/01/2022 18:27

@Campbell14 I often drive up Fox Hill Road to avoid Halifax Road when it is really busy. The bottom part is quite a steep hill. I couldn't say what the area is like, but it doesn't look like somewhere where I have to locak the car to drive through. The nearer you get to Grenoside the nicer it is. Avoid Parson Cross.

You would be near a huge Sainsburys, and further up Grenoside Woods, which is a lovely place to go walking.

Are you planning to commute into Sheffield from there?

Fernyfloor · 19/01/2022 18:29

Again I only know it to drive through. That particular road can get very busy and Birley Carr isn't a great area to be honest. Further up is Grenoside which is nice. Other areas I like are Oughtibridge and Worral. What's your budget?

Campbell14 · 19/01/2022 18:39

Hi @RampantIvy,
Thank you for your tip! No we are not planning on commuting to Sheffield as we'll be wfh.

@Fernyfloor, our budget is between 250-300K. Ideally looking for 3+ bedroom house, Detached or Semi-D.

Fernyfloor · 19/01/2022 19:15

I would definitely look at Grenoside, Oughtibridge, Worral, Loxley, Wadsley (don't confuse with Wadsley Bridge), S10 or S11 although on your budget they might be too expensive. Parts of Stannington are good too. If you are happy to be further out from Sheffield you could look at Chapeltown or High green.
