Where to live in Sheffield

CCGGREENIE · 16/09/2020 13:24

Hi,

I am not from Sheffield and I am planning on buying a house here with my boyfriend. However, due to neither of us being from here we are not sure as to which are the best areas. This will be our first house so we are looking at houses in the region of £200,000 to £250,000. We know we like quite a few areas near the peaks side of Sheffield but not as keen on places like Woodhouse. I was wondering if anyone who knows the area could give me some suggestions. I want to make sure I am buying something in a reasonably nice place but I know the peaks side can be quite expensive.

I will really appreciate any responses. Thankyou in advance. Smile

I love netheredge particularly near brincliffe. If we could have bought there and been able to afford a place with a decent garden, I think we would have done. You can walk to town plus have all the bars, shops and restaurants on Abbeydale.

BigMamaFratelli · 21/09/2020 11:34

I live in nether edge and completely love it. The bars, the bakeries, so many lovely cafes, great little shops. It's an easy walk in to town and an easy drive to the Peaks. There's a farmer's market every month and loads of people open their gardens for a boot sale type thing. I know there's been a few crime incidents recently but I still feel really safe walking around, even alone at night. Prices aren't ridiculous either.

FrancesFlute · 21/09/2020 17:33

Crookes would fit your bill.

Xmasbaby11 · 21/09/2020 17:48

I live in Meersbrook. It's a lovely area, friendly, green. I've not been burgled in 9 years but it seems to depend on the area / road.

The schools are improving and the area has become a lot more middle class and desirable - its reputation within Sheffield has improved in recent years.

However I'm probably biased as it's my home!

CatAndHisKit · 23/09/2020 00:49

So is Meersbrook a cut off point for good areas in that direction? What about Gleadless right nixt to Townend station? I know it's boring and not much there, BUT has a good tram and a Sainsbury's for practical stuff and presumably easy enoug to get to Heeley/Nether Edge. The only thing is, there does;t seem to be a nice park there - commons yes but not a proper park like Hillsborough or the ones around Walkley.
How is it for crime levels?

AltheaVestr1t · 23/09/2020 07:01

Gleadless Townend is not a good area.

CatAndHisKit · 23/09/2020 11:06

Althea I know it looks boring, but do you mean it's worse, i.e. crime?

TheQueef · 23/09/2020 11:08

Cat go further on the tram line, Westfield etc.
Gleadless has been a bit of a dumping ground the last few years and the SH has problems.

Sheffielddddd · 23/09/2020 12:16

www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/crime/axe-attack-left-sheffield-police-woman-finger-hanging-1789283

These are the sorts of social problems that Gleadless has, it's a very rough area.

CatAndHisKit · 23/09/2020 18:01

Shame, of course police incidents can happen anywhere, and someone mentioned ther ewere shootings in the nice Netheredge.
By looking at houses on rightmove tey aer nice, whole streets of normal people live there, I just thought how bad can it be!

I do like Crookes but can only afford a 2 bed there (or in Walkley but W tends to have little courtyards if the house is slightly bigger / has attic bedroom) - the question is, have these terraces reached their ceiling price now and may even go down from the current infated level? I may tru to squeeze myself into the space but def don't want to invest badly as it's already on the low level of pricing. Location is great though, upper [part of crookes.

SouthernBird · 23/09/2020 21:02

I know some lovely people from Gleadless Townend and Manor but they are areas that have more than their fair share of problems. Doesn't mean you will have crime issues but as an area it is more prone.

BigMamaFratelli · 24/09/2020 19:48

I know some lovely people from Gleadless Townend and Manor

Me too. I wouldn't choose to live in any of those areas though, and I used to live in Norfolk park.

CatAndHisKit · 26/09/2020 00:19

BigMama yes Gleadless is unanimously out!
What about Sharrow (not Vale) - I'm not keen on te top of London Rd but the side streets to the side towards Ecclesall seem ok and you do get a a but more value for money with size/quality of houses. As I say my problem is, I can't have it all - it's either tiny house in good location (like Crookes) or something a bit bigger and not a perfect location. I'm considering HIllsborough which is ok.
I could buy a tiny terrace in Crookes but am worried they've reached their ceiling and are overpriced currently (2 up 2 down ones), so apart from being cramped, they won't go up in value and might drop actually.

BigMamaFratelli · 26/09/2020 10:40

I don't think prices in crookes will ever drop that much because there will always be demand from the student/landlord sector.

I'd choose sharrow over Hillsborough because I just think abbeydale and eccy road have so much to offer. There's some lovely bits in Hillsborough though and you get plenty for your money.

CatAndHisKit · 26/09/2020 20:34

BigMama I've been viewing in both now and you'd be surprised but HIllsborough prices are up and similar to the same/bigger size house I saw in Sharrow. It's cheaper on the stadium end (or if needing modernisation) but anything a bit further opposite the park and the bus station end is not cheap! Cheaper than Walkley's better streets and Crookes, but about same as what I saw in the top end of Sharrow.

CatAndHisKit · 26/09/2020 20:39

Also Sharrow has so many rentals - as opposed tto Crookes upper part / Hillsb which feel more residential / community places. I can't afford to be just off Eccy Rd, but can be 10min from it (closer to London rd) - still as you say there is a lot on offer, love Eccy rd and there is waitrose. Very torn!

CCGGREENIE · 28/09/2020 20:39

Thank you so much for the suggestion. I had never heard of Penistone and since yours and other people's suggestions I am now buying my first house there 😊. Very grateful!

Stocksbridge is worth a look, as are Deepcar and Wharncliffe Side

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 28/09/2020 20:55

I’ve loved round Crookes/Broomhill/Crosspool for years.

Broomhill and Crookes are increasingly less students. So much new accommodation has been built for students that the old student areas have a LOT less students in them.

Didn’t read the thing about schools properly. But Tapton was one of the best 25 state schools outside London a year or so ago

CatAndHisKit · 29/09/2020 01:21

TheEmoji what about Sharrow towads London rd? sems likethat's more studenty than it used to be? would you buy there as seems like you get more for your money and it's close to good places but is a bit gritty of course.

SayWhatTheWhatNow · 29/09/2020 08:54

Penistone is lovely OP
Some nice restaurants, fab walks and train to Sheffield

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 29/09/2020 09:22

Not keen on that area. There’s some lovely houses, but l don’t think it feels very safe.

fellrunner83 · 29/09/2020 10:39

Nether Edge is nice but becoming increasingly dodgy in certain areas - I had rocks thrown at me out running there, for example, which has never happened in Crookes, Broomhill, Walkley, Hillsborough etc.

Crookes and Broomhill are nice but very studenty. Also expensive compared to Walkley. IMO Walkley is great and you can get a lot more for your money there than in Crookes. Right on the edge of stunning countryside - the Rivelin Valley takes you right out to Stanage Edge - plus lots of new coffee shops, cafes, naice artisanal shops and all that jazz.

In Walkley you can get something like this in your price range:
www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-81203785.html

which is far bigger than anything you'd get in Crookes or Broomhill, or indeed closer to Hunters Bar/Eccy Road.

Penistone is lovely too, OP - hope you're happy there Smile

CatAndHisKit · 29/09/2020 17:56

fellrunner that house is in Hillsborough really, nearly by the Hillsb tram station - Walkely off South Rdd / Howard St is more expensive (well agents call it Walkley). Crookes is indeed ridiculously expensive!

Is Penistone still Sheffield though? Looks to be closer to Barnsley Grin

CatAndHisKit · 29/09/2020 18:01

fellrunner could you tell me where the nice cafes etc are in Walkley if you mean apart from South Rd (I'm looking in the area but haven't been the side of Rivelin/ Malin Bridge yet)?
