Funding renovations

How have you funded renovations to your house. Do you use your own savings or take out a personal loan or do you make changes slowly as and when you have the funds?

We are looking at substantial work. Complete modernisation.

We were moving to our current house when our eldest was going into sixth form. I wanted him to remember a home he wants to come back to. So we took out an additional mortgage to fund the renovations and paying this off over time
