Did you talk to architects past clients?

I know the general view (ideally following a recommendation) is to talk to previous clients of builders, and if possible go and see there work. Have any of you done this with an architect? I’m employing an architect that I found via Houzz. They have a couple of reviews and have a large body of work, but I still feel nervous!

I didn't go and see their work but I did call two references and double checked that they were happy, also that the pics the architect had shown me were of the work they'd had done.

You can also google generally and look for reviews/pics/comments, but I'd definitely phone at least two former clients.
