DIY walk in wardrobe

OH is good very good DIY..thinking of fitting a walk in wardrobe/dressing room in our spare box room (which is basically an overflow room of all our clothes, shoes & general junk)

Thinking of using IKEA in either black or white. Which would you go for?

Any other places to buy asides from IKEA? Things to think about? Must haves? I’d say £2-£3k is our max budget. OH will fit it all. Tia

Pax are fantastic, and when well designed they hold an astonishing amount. We've just moved house, our old house had a 4m run of pax with loads of drawers - new house has similar sized fitted wardrobes and they haven't even come close to holding what the pax did. To the extent I've just bought a single (1m) one with several drawers to give me the extra space.

I also used them to do a built in (no doors as in a little side room) fitted wardrobe for my mum in law. Again, holds loads and very flexible. She got a joiner to fit - I was very pregnant so wasn't up for doing it - and he was so sure I'd got the measurements wrong, tried to put too much in, it would never fit. It fitted, like a glove.

All of the doors are from the ikea kitchen range

@HasaDigaEebowai - even the full height ones?!

Are the drawers actually kitchen drawers then?

Apologies for all the questions - trying to get my head around what i need to look at

Yes the full height ones too. They usually go onto kitchen larder units.

The drawers are kitchen drawers 800 wide

Mind blown! Shock What an awesome idea!

There's an ig account called Chrislovesjulia who created a wardrobe of dreams - in America, so bigger than my entire house probably but worth a look for inspiration perhaps!

Amazing ideas - taking my box room to another realm now!

What’s people’s thoughts on black carcasses with perhaps a gold trim/gold handles? (‘Old gold’)?

If that’s what you like then go for it. Personally I’m not a fan of all black furniture. Probably my age but it reminds me of 80s/90s black ash flat pack. I’d go with midnight blue or very dark green with brushed brass fittings.

Sounds nice. Prefer not to paint it all though. They do a ‘black/brown’ PAX - anyone have this?

My new one is the black brown - mainly because it was the ONLY carcass in stock! When we were trying to order last week there were some major stock issues

Sunisshining12 · 08/09/2020 21:13

What’s it like in reality? Would it be okay for a dressing room?

Absolutely fine I think - it looks quite smart. I'd originally got it with the intention of painting it to match our built in wardrobe doors but I actually quite like it.

It's not a pure black, definitely has a brown tone to it. Would go well with a more aged brass/dull gold I think.

We are in the midst of building a walk in wardrobe off our bedroom. In our case we have used 18mm MDF to create the innards. This can be painted (though we probably wont bother as DH & I are the only people who will see them!). Then we are having sliding doors in front of these.

Two runs of 3.5m floor to ceiling. We have never had so much storage space for the two of us. I'm not sure we will even fill it!
