Where to live in or near Loughborough?

Hubby had been offered a job we can’t refuse in Loughborough. We’ve lived in Liverpool our whole lives so it’s a bit daunting moving. We have 3 children, 1 in primary and two in secondary. So just looking for tips on where would be nice to live and would have good schools. Hubby doesn’t mind a little commute into Loughborough. Thanks in advance 😊

In Loughborough itself, Nanpantan is nice and Holywell PS is Ofsted outstanding. There are some lovely villages - Woodhouse and Woodhouse Eaves, also Quorn and Rothley between Loughborough and Leicester. Charnwood Forest, Beacon Hill and Bradgate are amazing!

Thank you so much for your reply. We’re planning to take a drive down there and have a look around so this gives us some much needed help of where to check out 😊

Add Barrow Upon Soar to your list. Lovely friendly village, with a decent high street (when I was there, there was a co-op, a village shop, pharmacy, doctors surgery, a few takeaways and a little cafe). The Blacksmith Arms was always excellent for nice food

Also look towards Nottingham - Wymeswold and the wolds villages around there.

FYI if looking north of Loughborough agree the villages are lovely but be aware of the EMA flightpaths. Pre-Covid planes ran every 5 minutes 24/7 as it is a cargo hub. Current air traffic won't be representative.

What do you like/ not?
Urban- head towards Nottingham
Rural- it’s a dream round there so so many nice areas
What’s your budget?

Loobylav · 31/08/2020 15:39

Thanks everyone, so much to think about. Thanks for the flight path tip, I’ll be sure to avoid that. I’ve never lived rural so would be very different. I like the sound of having a high street like Barrow Upon Soar is described.
In all honesty my biggest worry at the moment is getting a decent secondary school with places.
We plan on renting for while as we’ll need to sort the house out in Liverpool and then hopefully we’ll have a better idea of areas when it comes to buying.
Really appreciate all your replies. It’s so much better speaking to people who know the area well xx

Ruddington is a really nice small town with a great little shopping area. It’s actually in Nottinghamshire, but only a quick 20min drive down the A60 to Loughborough, you’d be going in the opposite direction to rush hour traffic into Nottingham so not a bad drive at all to Loughborough. The secondary schools for Ruddington are The West Bridgford School and also Rushcliffe in West Bridgford, both rated Outstanding. There is also a frequent bus into Nottingham from Ruddington and two well rated primary schools. It’s a lovely area. Small town, but lots going on and easy access

Barrow and Quorn are both nice imo. My grandparents lived in Sileby which was also nice but I haven't been back since they died some years ago. Possibly worth a look though. They lived on Seagrave Road and Seagrave was a lovely village.

Loobylav · 31/08/2020 16:22

Wouldn’t have thought to look that far out but 20mins would be fine. It definitely sounds worth a look, thanks for the school tips, I’ll take a look at them now x

Something I can actually provide reasonable input on.

Friend moved there a few years back and I made my first visit to the area. Town seemed nice enough though obviously all that might change with the economy but its the same for all shopping areas. Thought the area on and around Beacon Road was nice.

I dont know much about North of Loughborough but South....Quorn and Rothley would be high on my list of villages but also Barrow. Sileby, Mountsorrel and parts of Birstall would be worth looking at. Also like Cropston, Thurcaston, Newton Lindford, parts of Anstey. Check your school catchments for some of these places as I've started looking to move because of secondary schools. Not made any decisions yet though!

Like the above poster, i know more about the Leicester side of Loughborough than Nottingham.

Newtown Linford would be my #1 pick, although it's small and nothing much going on, but it's lovely with Bradgate on your doorstep.

Quorn and Barrow are both decent too and with a bit more life. Someone mentioned Seagrave above, Leicester City's (massive) new training ground is being built around there, so not sure how much that is changing the local area.
