Does a house need a theme throughout?

Just that really or would it be strange to have different sort of themes for each room for example modern high gloss kitchen and then country style lounge? Tropical/jungle animal in one room then pink and white relaxing type in another etc

A house that was a complete mess, ie every room in a different style, would give me a headache.

It doesn’t need to all be identical but needs something to unite the scheme like the colour palette or use of similar materials etc.

I think full themed rooms are probably a bit much (also they often date quickly) and that if you generally buy what you like you naturally end up with a cohesive house. I’d be particularly careful where you can see into more than one room, eg from a hallway.

we are in the middle of renovating our house we have gone for monochrome bedroom with grey carpet, bathroom has beige tiles brown themed hall to break up the upstairs from downstairs, then modern gloss kitchen in pale blue units with grey walls and wooden patterned flooring and have picked grey patterned wallpaper and will go for quite a dark grey carpet for the lounge so carries on the grey but not totally grey all through, so each room compliments the others but not themed as such i think going for totally different themes will grate eventually

I think your taste tends to dictate a loose theme, if you're taste is gentle pastels, you are unlikely to fancy a tropical living room! Mind you, I'm not a fan of a house having the same carpet throughout, it reminds me of a developer tarting up to sell.

It doesn’t need a theme but it also doesn’t need to be a hot mess that jars, which your examples would.

You want the rooms to flow and be cohesive.

I think a house feels too disjointed with too many themes or styles. I've just finished redecorating ours and whilst the toons each have there own personalities ( ie they're not all the same) they do have similar complementary colours or are from the same palette, so it flows as you walk through. I have friends who's houses are a different style in each room( whatever has been fashionable as they've decorated) and it can be a bit much.

I think a modern kitchen can look great in an otherwise period home.

And IMO, it's more important that bedrooms are as the inhabitants want them as they have to live in them and they're not open to visitors anyway (except for other children who won't care about the tonal harmony of the decor!).

But in terms of your house, OP - I'd say if you're living in it, do it up however you want, but if you're trying to sell it, you might want to depersonalise it a bit to make it easier to sell.

I think using a base colour throughout like calico on walls and ceiling then a highlight colour on some walls and another for accessories.
If using different colours in rooms they should be from the same hue so they don't clash.
If one room runs into another you can't change the accent colour as it wouldn't flow.

I have been a bit fixated on pirates lately. It’s weird that kids love them but we overlook that they’re an actual real threat in the world.

I actually love this thread! It’s not helped clear my mind but it’s given me food for thought. When we moved into my house we painted everything white or very light grey but finally got round to adding some colour over lockdown. Now I want to add more colour!!!! But I’m struggling with getting the balance right. And two rooms next door to each other having clashing colours? But I also don’t want everything to be the same colour.

My downstairs can be open plan if I open all the big doors up but they are still separate rooms.

I like the idea of the same palette/hue.

Our house is old, so we've tried not to lose what period features still exist and be complementary to them. Otherwise, every room in our house is a different colour (gradually painting over the initial magnolia). We've tried to get similar furniture within a given room but most is second hand anyway. You are only ever in one room at a time so what does it matter?

I guess in our case we have an 'eclectic' theme throughout 😂.
