Garage Bedroom Conversion

Topsy1980 · 21/08/2020 19:37

My 6yo has a box room for a bedroom and we can’t fit in a single bed. We can’t afford to build on top of the garage or to move so are looking at a garage conversion. He will be 7 when he moves in. I’m hesitant about my 7yo sleeping downstairs. Has anyone done this? What are other people’s experiences?

You may need planning permission for change of use. Check with your local planning dept. before spending a wedge on paint, furniture etc.

Could you use the conversion as the master and give him a room upstairs? I wouldn’t want a child on their own downstairs as would feel they were exposed in the event of a break in.

Thank you.
I think we will need planning perms but even with those it’s significantly less expensive than moving house or building up.
I do feel reassured at the idea of both kids being upstairs and us sleeping downstairs. It’s still not my ideal scenario -
has anyone else done this garage/bedroom conversion??

We're currently in the planning phase of this, was thinking DH & I downstairs and kids up stairs.
Would prefer that to child downstairs I think.
You could have an en-suite - will be lovely x

It's not change of use as long as the garage was always part of the house and used for domestic purposes. So should be permitted development.

It's the Building Regs that you need to consider. Wall insulation and roof insulation and possibly floor too. I think you'd be building a room inside a 'room'.
Building over the garage should increase the value of your house...

@wineymummy

It's not change of use as long as the garage was always part of the house and used for domestic purposes. So should be permitted development.
You also need to check whether there were any conditions imposed when the garage was originally built - sometimes the planning permission required them to be kept as garages, so you would need PP to relax the condition.
