Fitted wardrobes - cost

We will be looking at having fitted wardrobes sometime in the future. The space is quite large approximately 8ft long.

Are the big companies like Sharps a rip off/expensive?

I did have a bespoke utility cupboard built with a shelf and folding doors, plus wardrobe doors fitted to a recess in a bedroom which cost me £900 by an excellent carpenter, so I know that can be pricey too.

Just wondering what the difference in prices may be and what people have paid.

We had wardrobes installed in 2018 and had a quote from Sharps - we were really shocked at how expensive they were.

The wardrobe space was just over 11' wide and we did want floor to ceiling but they quoted £15K and then of course came the hard sell - "buy today and take advantage of the sale price but we'll also knock x% off" which made it about £7K (from memory).

We ended up using IKEA PAX fitted wardrobes and getting a carpenter to make the doors so that the wardrobes were still floor to ceiling as IKEA didn't do floor to ceiling wardrobes at the time.

We ended up with nice doors and really good, functional wardrobes for around the 3K mark I think.

I think that sharps look good but imo they're very expensive. If you are looking at high end and don't mind spending money on it, take a look at Neville Johnson (but they are £££).

We’re having built in wardrobes built by our joiner 3 metres long for £2800. We were going to have him build two more units a metre wide by 2m20 high but decided to get them made by Pineland pineland.co.uk/services/ - cheaper still £1600 for the two and they come painted. You just tell which F&B or other make colour and they match it. They make them to what ever size you want them. With the size you want you may have order 2 units and put them side - maybe get a joiner to make a frame.

That sounds a more reasonable price! What's going inside? Is he putting you rails and shelves?

I'm getting 2 fitted wardrobes and bay window seat done.
Wardrobe 1 - 3m
Wardrobe 2 - 2m
Bay window seat
Sharps quote is £11k after all their usual discounts

My carpenter has given me a quote of £3500 incl materials (excl handles). They are using 18mm MFC (melamine faced chipboard); Blume hinges, soft close drawers etc; with usual mix of 3 x drawers, 4 x shelves, hanger rails

Any thoughts? Is this good deal ?

We had a quote from sharps in our old house for built in wardrobes either side of a chimney breast - not a huge space. It was £10k! We got freestanding in the end.

Certainly won't be going to Sharps. They sound horrendously expensive
