looking to move to lingfield, commuting to london

We are looking to move out of London to Lingfield, I will still need to commute into London for work, looking for knowledge and experience on the trains (pre lockdown), especially as I cannot test the commute now - I think ill be able to handle the time but not if it is standing room only - any advice appreciated...

I’m not from Lingfield but isn’t it on the final approach into Gatwick? Did you visit the area pre lockdown to listen to plane noise?

Depends what time you train you catch probably but I think you should be fine from Lingfield for a seat. The main influx stations where masses get on are Oxted and East Croydon and Lingfield is before that.

You only have EG and Dormans (tiny) before Lingfield.

Second what a PP says about the plane noise. We viewed in Lingfield and rejected because f plane noise, it is constant. But people who live there say they do get used to it and not notice it.

To add, I used to get on after Oxted and was still fine for a seat as long as I didn't leave it too late.

Oxted is lovely but will be more pricey than Lingfield.

Oxted is very quiet (I’m very sensitive to plane noise and find it barely perceptible there ie better than 99% of places in London or the commuter belt. If you’re on the M25 side, you’ll get a bit of a hum occasionally (depending on weather conditions).

I go and visit my family in EG fairly regularly from London. I've found that the trains are often changed to bus services from Oxted to EG on weekends, apparently because that line needs to be fixed nearly every weekend!

It's really annoying, it's blatantly because the train company is trying to save money on a part of the network that's a bit quieter, but we still have to pay train prices for a very slow coach.

traffic was a bit mad for my other half in both Lingfield and Oxted this weekend....we are now thinking haywards heath which both times we went were noticeably quieter...

I’m really surprised. I’ve never seen much traffic in Oxted at all. Are you sure that wasn’t a one off crazy diversion or something?

Lingfield is bad for planes and oxted does get the m25 noise. But traffic not bad in either and trains fine too for commuting.

There’s no plane noise over Haywards Heath. The occasional plane comes over but it isn’t a flight path. Look at Cuckfield and Lindfield as well as HH, both villages walkable to the station with good schools too.

There isn’t much plane noise over HH just how, but there is usually when Gatwick is closer to capacity. waves at planes flying over

Commuting from HH is easy, the trains are frequent and as long as you are on the train before 0730 you can usually get a seat. Going forward it’s looking like less people will be commuting which will hopefully mean less people on each service.

There were problems on the M25 at the weekend which might have led the A25 to be much busier than usual this weekend, traffic isn't really a problem that Oxted suffers from.

That said, I have friends in Hayward's Heath and they like it very much )I don't really know it very well myself).

thanks all - still considering all possibilities. good to hear seats available on HH trains, and agree it should be less full moving forward (that is it they don't cut the trains!)

Lingfield gets no let up from plane noise whichever direction the wind is from. They either land or take off over it.
