Moving to Brighton area

Hi there,
My husband has a potential job opportunity in Brighton and I am pretty keen for a new adventure. However, I don't know the area well at all. We currently live in Greenwich.

We have 2 boys, 9 and 12 years old, so we would be looking at primary and secondary schools.

As he will be working in Brighton, I would imagine we wouldn't have to live in Brighton itself, we could move further away, as long as he can get there easily.

What areas are recommended for families with teenage boys? Our realistic budget is around £500000

Are you after town or village or a suburb etc?

Hove is very nice, possibly the further end if yu want fewer tourists.

Probably suburb or town. We are in a suburb now, so don't want it to be too much of a culture shock....

Areas near the train stations (Brighton, Preston Park, east Hove) are all obviously pricey, though Preston Park is great and lots to do around there. Hanover is lovely, family-friendly, and an easy walk into town and the beach, though the houses tend to have funny layouts – though that’s true across Brighton; lots of tall, multi-storey houses with kitchens on one floor, sitting rooms on another, bedrooms over two levels. Queen’s Park is pricey but the park is great, a little further out from town but still walkable and the beach is within easy reach. You could think about Lewes, too?

Although there are lots of student areas it’s all very family-friendly too, plenty to do on the seafront (though spendy to live very close by) and in town North Laine and The Lanes are teenage heaven. It’s a small enough city you can walk in from most neighbourhoods but not feel you’re in the centre of town.

On your budget you might have luck what estate agents call the Coombe Road Area – up past the cemeteries, on the way to the universities: look at the roads behind Bear Road (not that road itself as it’s a main one). You’re be near the allotments/race course/tip/coast road to the lido/routes out of town, but it’s walkable to The Level (big flat park with a skateboard park and cafe) and town.

Hove near Aldrington Station, north side of the tracks as you get more bang for your buck but still close to beach, parks and shops. Catchment for Blatchington Mill and Hove Park schools. About 20 mins to town on a bike/bus. I live in the Hangleton area which is very popular these day with families as you get bigger gardens and free parking. I have lived in Brighton and Hove for years and I am very happy raising my kids in Hove. We have spent every summer evening at Hove Lagoon as it is a short trip from our house.
