Best exterior basement door

I have a cellar which has direct access to the back garden. The current wooden door needs replacing and I wondered if anyone could recommend a door type. When we had our other doors updated last year, I was told that a composite door wasn’t possible in the cellar (it’s a smaller than average door).

What options are available? Security is an issue as it is a second home which is used two or three times a year. I’ve seen aluminium doors online, are they secure? Ideally I would like the door to be at least partially glazed, to let light into the cellar. The previous company wanted to fit a upvc door in the cellar but I’m concerned it’s not secure enough.

Thanks!

If it's an unusual size, you could try to find a local joiner who can easily make a new door and frame to fit. There are also joinery companies who specialise in repro and restoration work for grand houses, and grand pockets.

I'd suggest fairly small glazing panels, fitted with obscure laminated glass.

You could have a matching wooden shutter to go over the glass if you are expecting people to try to break in, because glass looks like a weak point. Presumably you only need light when the building is occupied, and don't want people to see what's inside.

I'd suggest a BS mortice lock a third up from the bottom, and one a third down from the top, though you could use bolts if you like.

Thanks! For some reason my husband thinks that wooden means less secure, which is why I was wondering if there are any other options out there. I’ll investigate local joiners and see what they suggest.

He must hate plastic doors.
