How big does a bedroom need to be to able to fit in an ensuite?

I'm amazed at 4 bed houses with 2 ensures - I'm guessing these aren't Victorian terraces.

We're putting another bedroom in but in Mumsnet world it has to have an ensuite (actually it needs two to make up for the fact we only have a bathroom). I don't think it's going to be big enough

It depends where you are really. Victorian terraces can often have bigger bedrooms than new builds. Rule of thumb is that if you have space for a dressing area then you probably have space for an ensuite. They don’t really take much room. We managed to get a huge one in where we had wardrobes without sacrificing any space.

Are you asking about. bedroom size to ‘fit’ an en suite because you want to just put in the corner of a room? I’d be reluctant as it looks awful and is awkward.
Have you got an architect to see how you could rejig the layout to make it work well?

@JoJoSM2 the architect has drawn up the plans but it's a rectangular room, an ensuite would have to be at the back for services so there isn't really a lot of design to play with (I'm hoping the flue stack can be redirected or we'll have a chimney in the middle of where an ensuite could be. The external dimensions are 6m X 3m so I'm assuming we'll lose 50-80cm off that (what do you think?). I've marked it out on our patio and it's ok but never going to be enormous.

@GrumpyHoonMain we do have wardrobes in our master bedroom but all along the wall so probably 0.5m by 2.5m - not really ensuite space and the only other space for the wardrobes would be where the bed is (dual aspect with 3m windows) so two walls unusable). I guess the room is around 3.5m by 4m and can't fit an ensuite, so I was starting to wonder if the new room (which is intended to be an office as we don't need another bedroom) can fit an ensuite. I'm hoping an ensuite can fit in a 2m by 2m space - does that sound about right?

2x2 is big enough for a shower room. If possible, you could always add the en suite to the new ‘office’ (so that it’s a bedroom) and the bedroom could be the office?

4x3.5m could maybe have en suite depending the layout and services. For example the sort of layout in the photo. It’s probably only 1m wide and could go along one wall but it is quite awkward tbh.

Yes we're going to make the ensuite entrance off the hall rather than off the room so it's more of a standalone shower room, and then it can be used by anyone. Totally get what you mean about making that the bedroom and turning our bedroom into an office but if we ever have anyone to stay overnight again, it's probably easier to give up the office room and let them stay in their with what could be their own shower room for their stay (if you get what I mean!) I think we'll put a sofa bed in the office and then the kids can use it as a TV room in the evening or something.

Yes 2 by 2 is plenty. Mine was smaller but I have a huge walk-in shower / sink / loo. It’s bigger than our family bathroom but we live in a tiny new build

For the layout in the pic above, the narrowest possible width is 0.8m once the room is built and plastered. I think 2.4m length makes it doable.

That layout is very much for a small Ensuite I think, not a bathroom for general use in a house. You'd only want 1 person in there at a time and often they would dress in the bedroom as space is tight. Doesn't really work if it opens into the hallway. Can be a good layout for a genuine Ensuite though, if space is tight and otherwise a house might only have 1 bathroom or loo.

in a previous house the en-suite was 80x160cm.
a build in wardrobe 80cm deep next to it to keep that wall smooth without nook.

Agree with wombat - if it's not an actual en-suite (door from the bedroom) then I wouldn't bother as that would just make it an odd second bathroom upstairs, I'd rather have decent sized bedrooms without an en-suite than a tiny one with personally.

I think a bathroom off a hallway is very different to an Ensuite which is off a bedroom. If you re-title the thread, you might get more feedback which is useful for your situation.

The other thing about the picture upthread, that means that layout works for an Ensuite but not hallway bathroom, is the door needs to open outwards because of the narrow layout. That's fine for a bedroom, but doesn't work into a hallway, where doors tend to open inwards.....and hallways or landings can be quite narrow mean it definitely wouldn't work. I guess the sliding pocket door makes it an option.

in the flat we are renting currently the ensuite is about twice the size of the standalone (family) bathroom. And it's the biggest room, so it's our kid's room. He is a spoiled brat.
The room is about 20sqm and the bathroom is about 12.
In our prev flat we had the ensuit and it was small, about 2m*2,5m. And it was big enough for the toilet, shower and sink.
