We have a small deck 3x3m. It needs replacing. There is concrete underneath but it might be quite rough, I haven't seen it for 15 years!!!! What surface is cheap and not ugly????????

I'd go for paving slabs with brick edging. But to do it properly you most likely need to break up and dig out the old material and lay a new base so that the paving is two bricks beneath your dpc, does not obstruct airbricks, and slopes slightly so that water runs away from the house.

There are numerous damp houses where one or more of those things was not done.

cheap, you say?

Perhaps not.

We've just replaced our 15 year old wooden decking with composite decking. It looks really good, is more hard wearing than wood and we are very pleased with it. I can't say it was cheap, but DH did it so it only cost us the price of materials. The original base was sound so we didn't need to replace that.

I would take the concrete up and put a lawn in. Seriously. I’d far sooner have something green and growing.

Composite decking. I love it. Nothing cheap will last but there are more expensive things than composite.
