Turquoise Bathroom!

Hiya, we are (hopefully) moving in a few weeks to our first 'owned' house, we love the house and the decoration is very clean but rather dated to say the least! Once we have factored in new carpets (a real essential for me) and other moving in costs we are going to have to save for a little while before we can replace the bathroom. At the moment the toilet, wash basin and bath are all a horrible turquoise colour (Confused) is there anything I can do about them really cheaply for a year or so? I am doubting that they can be painted but happy to be told I am wrong! The rest of the bathroom is laminate flooring, white tiles with occasional turquoise flower tiles (I have found ways to cover them up!) and a dark blue flowery wallpapered wall (which I actually quite like). Any ideas for the bathroom suite or is the only option to live with it until we can fully replace?

I think we need a photo please!

Janaih · 25/07/2020 09:24

I used to watch how clean is your home and I was always amazed how good even the most hideous of decor looked when given a deep clean and clutter tidied away. So I would do that. Could you freshen up the grout? New taps maybe? Vinyl over the laminate in a modern design?

Ok, I don't want to put a full photo on here in case the vendors see but here is the toilet...

Very dated as you can see!

Paint the pipes and be patient.

slipperywhensparticus · 25/07/2020 09:31

Bathrooms are quite cheep to replace with basic white ones so painting would not be cost effective

Babyshine2020 · 25/07/2020 09:31

you can paint the suite. Have a google but it's a thing. If you're on Facebook have a look at DIY On a budget, you'll be amazed (some of it is the same crap however)

@Mosaic123

Paint the pipes and be patient.
Thank you, I presume there is a special type of paint we would need? (Sorry - complete DIY novice)

Also, check Facebook for a new suite?

We have a new build and it's only me and my husband, we have 3 toilets (en-suite, family bathroom and downstairs we) so never use the family bathroom (maybe had 6 baths since we moved in) - we're selling the suite for £40 just to get rid of it.

Doing the same with the en-suite next week

Magicbabywaves · 25/07/2020 09:33

I actually like that turquoise colour. I reckon you could work with it as it’s actually retro. Pink tiles maybe?

Girlswithflowers · 25/07/2020 09:33

Clean, clean, clean. Bleach and mould and mildew spray will be your friend.
Paint any shabby pipework brilliant white. Bleach any plastic piping (like the grubby looking one in photo).
Sparkly clean and dated is very different to grubby and dated.

We looked and I agree that the bathroom suites are cheap but having someone to fit it seems out of our budget at the moment.

As long as it was clean, and in good working order, I'd quite enjoy living with that for a year! It's actually quite a nice colour Blush at least it's not peach or avocado!

NotMeNoNo · 25/07/2020 09:37

Embrace the retro. Clean it throughly, nake sure everything works eg you might need new tap washers or some descaling, accessorize in 1960s style.

Shannith · 25/07/2020 09:37

Embrace the retro. Really, paint all the pipes and paintable and a massive clean then add a rival Bridget blue, cream and grey accessories. Maybe a touch of hot people pink.

My free standing bath is that colour and it goes really well with a skate grey floor and pale grey, cream and a sort of muted green. It's my favourite colour!

mysteryfairy · 25/07/2020 09:38

It would be a real shame not to just make a feature of it! I love the tiles and absolutely would not cover them up. Why not make a feature of it being retro...maybe orla Kiely accessories? Some greenery....ivy and Boston fern do well in bathrooms...will soften it a bit. Salvaged vintage bathroom suites are in demand so enjoy having one already installed.

Seeingadistance · 25/07/2020 09:39

I’d love to have a turquoise bathroom!

luvabellawilleatme · 25/07/2020 09:39

Actually I agree, maybe just deep clean, brighten up the pipes, put some vinyl or something over the floor and get rid of the nasty blue flowers on the tiles. It also has a lift thing over the bath to lower you in and out for elderly people, I suppose the children can have fun rides on that 😂

Shannith · 25/07/2020 09:41

Oh my god. My autocorrect had an absolute field day with that!

A rival Bridget blue = a brighter tonal blue
Hot people pink = just pink though feel free to add some hot people.

Perhaps I've just invented some new F&B colours?

soundsystem · 25/07/2020 09:41

Don't paint it and ruin it! Take it out and sell it - there are plenty of people who would love that! Then use the proceeds to buy a basic white suite if that's your thing.

(If you're anywhere near me, I'd buy it in a shot! Have been looking for one for a while in just that colour!)

luvabellawilleatme · 25/07/2020 09:42

I am not sure I can embrace the tiles - as soon as I saw them they reminded me of giant germs! My own Covid-19 bathroomGrin

@Magicbabywaves Turquiose suite and pink tiles is my plan for when we finally get round to re-doing our family bathroom. Which currently has a plain white suite in it Grin

NotMeNoNo · 25/07/2020 09:48

Also old loos are less water saving but at least they have a decent flush.
Tkmaxx often have Orla Kiely or similar colourful towels. I"d remove the disabled items you might get some money for those.

Good luck, the bathroom in our first house was yellow brown, yuk.

Lemonylemony · 25/07/2020 09:48

I love it too! I’m future-planning a downstairs toilet and looking at reclaimed coloured sanitaryware (thinking of making a ‘patchwork’ suite with different coloured toilet bowl, cistern, sink, pedestal etc) and those coloured pieces are all worth money now. So even if it’s not your taste and you do change it, make sure they’re removed carefully as you’ll be able to sell them on.

Lemonylemony · 25/07/2020 09:50

Haha @Shannith I was about to google Bridget blue!
