Gas problem?

Hi
Need advice please! recent visit by national grid as I was noticing a sewer smell coming from under the boiler.

I was advised to call emergency line (hence national grid visit). Apparently there is escape if gas but only half ml? They switched off my gas and advised me that I need to call a gas engineer.
Gas engineer case and can’t find a problem with my boiler or cooker but think it will be my pipes and now want to replace all my pipes coming from my gas supply?! He claims small leaks are impossible to find and that this is a result of calling the gas service. Now I must replace all my pipes in order to have the gas turned back on?

He claims best case scenario £400 worst case is £900.

I’m a bit wary and wondering if I should get a second opinion?

I would. Check they are Gas Safe engineers. you can go to "Trading standards: check a Trade website" for gas people in your area. Don't tell them what the previous person said.
