Fly Invasion

For the second time in two months, we seem to have a house fly invasion in our kitchen. They are large, slow moving flies and we’re killing probably about 60 per day. They tend to congregate on our kitchen window. It’s disgusting.

We have narrowed it down to where they are coming from - the sideboard under our kitchen counter has a small gap and we have found they are coming from under there. We’ve taped it up for now and no more are coming through.

We’re now thinking we need to put some sort of poison under there to get rid of them so they don’t continue mating and breeding. Does anyone have any recommendations on what we might be able to use? Thanks in advance!

We had this issue in our lounge not long ago and we noticed they were coming from under the skirting. When we looked outside one of our air bricks had a branch stuck in it and it was near our water butt. We replaced the air brick and haven't had the issue since. Worth a look outside nearby!

Might be something has died under there somewhere....

They aren’t the flying ants, are they?

They kind of swarm in from under floors, we’ve had them try to come in a couple of times this year. I put ant powder where the gap is and I’ve only seen once or two since.

@Benhew we’re in a terraced house so not sure if that would help unfortunately Sad might need to have another look around though.

@Toodeloo I thought that too but we can see the entire space and nothing there.

@Mamette not flying ants. Might try finding some sort of powder to create a barrier!

We had a bad flying ant invasion in our kitchen earlier this month and had great success with this:

You just place one (or two - depending on how bad the problem is) of the bait stations in front of where the ants are coming from and wait...after 5 days, we had no ants!

RubyTrees · 20/07/2020 20:16

I meant to say the bait stations also work for non-flying ants.

Google Cluster flies.

We had a similar issue every years for a few weeks. Always about 20 flies in the front room window. They live and breed in the gaps in the mortar of the house. I went outside last year and found literally hundreds on the wall below my window. I zapped them all with fly spray killing the majority and I've not had them return since .

I wondered that badly... we had the problem for a few weeks every year..

Oh I give up bloody autocorrect!!

Are you south facing and in the country? We used to have them in Devon - it sounds like cluster flies - we could literally sweep them up. They especially like whitewashed walls. Horrid!
