Velux windows in a garage conversion - is planning permission needed?

If you convert your garage into a livable room and it juts out from the house about 2 or 3m a good way to get additional light in a north facing room would be velux windows in the sloping roof. However I'm not sure if that would require planning permission or not? Garage conversions don't seem to need to (except conservation areas etc) but what about additional windows in the roof?

Call your local planning office,, they'll have a duty planner who can advise you. Generally you don't need planning for a velux window to the rear of your house, so it will depend where your garage is located and which direction it faces.
