Would you buy a house with a japanese bath?!

Hi Property Gurus....need some advice on baths!

We are long overdue a bathroom refurb...it's v small but by nicking some pace from the adjacent (huge) room, we will end up with a bathroom that's 314 x 214 roughly

We know we can get the tub IN as we're taking down a wall....however, I don't know if anybody would ever be able to remove it?

And would YOU buy a home with a Japanese bath? We obviously would be we are complete Japanophiles!!

We are beginning to think it might end up being an expensive mistake as we already know that we will need to reinforce the floor.....

I am planning on getting an omnitub which is a semi-europeanised take on the Japanese concept. available in various lengths and widths. totally agree with pp there is no point to a bath if you have to let either tits or knees get freezing.

FlamedToACrisp · 03/07/2020 22:35

I'd have the bath you want, even if it's not the normal size/shape, but go for the whole Japanese-themed bathroom - it will look fantastically elegant and feel so relaxing.

If you do go to sell and the buyers don't like it, they will just knock the cost of a new bathroom off what they were going to offer you, but it might need a new bathroom by then anyway.

Embrace your inner Shogun!

pinkglove75318 · 03/07/2020 22:47

Could you post of picture of what you mean please?
I've googled and there seems to be Many different varieties !

NotABeliever · 03/07/2020 22:49

It depends on whether you're planning to sell in the future. I wouldn't fit anything unusual and expensive unless I thought I would, in all likelihood, not sell for the next 20 years.
I had the same conodrum with fitting a bidet which I find extremely useful because I'm from a country where it's commonly used but I know that a lot of people would think it's a waste of space.

Pipandmum · 03/07/2020 22:53

You are the ones living there. If I didnt like the bath in the house I would change it - it's not a deal breaker.

opinionatedfreak · 03/07/2020 22:59

I'm also looking at an omnitub.

I want a bigger shower cubicle as i use that most often and am bloody sick of banging my elbows when I wash my hair.

But I do also like the odd bath - and I think an omnitub solo plus would be a good compromise.

HerRoyalNotness · 03/07/2020 23:08

I like it, I don’t like lying in a bath so I wouldn’t mind the tub style. I’d prefer a massive walk in shower

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/07/2020 23:10

Our neighbours have a Japanese tub. I have total bathroom envy

Asdf12345 · 03/07/2020 23:13

It would put me off. But I’ve not had a bath of any kind in ten years (just had showers), at least a normal bath doesn’t scream weird choices. Our current place has two shower cubicles and no bath, the previous two places had baths that we never used aside from soaking horse rugs which we now do in a water butt outside.

That said it’s your house where you will live. Unless planning to be there for only a short time put what you want to live with in.

PutYourBackIntoit · 04/07/2020 00:29

The Omnitub is what we have, I'd thoroughly recommend!

PutYourBackIntoit · 04/07/2020 00:45

It has a shelf to sit on, and I've included a picture to show how it can work in a small bathroom. We saved space with a sliding door too. It doesn't use any more water than a regular bath (as we don't have a large one), but we've had 4 kids in it at once, and when it's just me I get up to my neck! No getting away from it though, I use acrobatic skills to clean it!

If I loved the house, I'd just factor in ripping it out. Can't see the point in them tbh. But then again, I wouldn't buy a house that didn't have room for a bath iywsim

Boopear · 04/07/2020 08:46

I have one and love it as well. Like you, it was really the only option for a small bathroom if I wanted a decent shower cubicle. I haven't got either but do think it would work really well for small kids (as it's fun) and bathing dogs (as they can't escape.. actually that also goes for small children!) I see it as a selling point more than anything..

Painsnail · 04/07/2020 08:55

I have an omnitub and I have a young child. She loves it, and I love that she can't climb out of it like she did with our old bath. We have a shower over it, as our bathroom is teeny and this really was the best use of the limited space.

Disfordarkchocolate · 04/07/2020 08:58

Yes, as you have a nice shower space too. They look so relaxing.

Charleyhorses · 04/07/2020 09:06

If you are not planning on moving for 5 years, have what you want.Life is too short. Make sure there is a shelf next to it for a nice glass of something.

BabyLlamaZen · 04/07/2020 09:10

Is it like this?

I would love it! But in one of the bathrooms e.g. adult's ensuite. I'd want another with more normal bath and shower.

But how long do you plan on living there for? Make your house yours!

SciFiScream · 04/07/2020 09:47

I'd love a deep soaking bath. I've been wondering how to fit one in our bathroom.

Depending on the length of any existing bath they can use less water. We'd use less water as we run a deep bath to try and avoid the cold body bits but our bath is long 1700mm I think so that's a lot of water.

We could almost fit a small shower cubicle next to a deep bath but now I'm wondering about putting a shower over instead. Hmmmm

AnotherEmma · 04/07/2020 09:56

"I have an omnitub and I have a young child. She loves it, and I love that she can't climb out of it like she did with our old bath."

Interesting. Do you find it's ok for leaning over to wash her?

SimonJT · 04/07/2020 10:02

I’ve had a look at mine and the internal depth is 70cm, my son is five so if its a hairwash day I tend to lean over with the shower head or I get in and sit on the little wooden stool in the tub. I am six foot so that does make leaning over it easy for me.

If I needed a baby bath I’d probably just put it in the shower cubicle if I didn’t get in the tub with the baby bath in there.

DoraemonDingDong · 04/07/2020 10:11

It would add extra appeal to a house for me ❤. Like @Ulrikaka said, tits and knees under the water? Sign me up!

Mawbags · 04/07/2020 10:24

Thanks so much everybody, it seems like it’s a goer!!

One question about omnitubs..... they don’t seem v deep at 600mm.... My husband is 6’5 and we have long long children so I need as deep as possible I think!

@SimonJT, where is yours from? Or... do you know how long you’re is pls?

@PutYourBackIntoit thanks for the pictures. Looks really comfy! Which omnitub have you got ?!

OP posts:
Pinnacular · 04/07/2020 10:25

I'm looking at getting an omnitub too. It holds the same amount of water as our current standard bath, but I imagine will actually need less because more body under the water so greater displacement. We're having a good sized shower cubicle for everyday. Wouldn't buy a house without a bath or room to put one in - a hot bath is one of the few things that alleviates my chronic pain.

Mawbags · 04/07/2020 10:29

Gosh @SimonJT
I’m not rich enough for yours! 😂🤣

Stayed in a posh hotel with one once. It was great!

Not very economical if you're on a water meter I would guess.
