Replacing work tops including breakfast bar

Hi all

Just moved into a new house. The kitchen is fairly new and great lay out but a really horrible shade of wood so going to get it resorayed.

Would love to change the work tops as they too are a very drab shade of brown however there’s akso a breakfast bar which will need changed also. Anyone had this done? Looked on a few web sites but could only find work tops so wondering if need it custom made?

Would love some advice as really not for a clue!

Have a look on eBay as often there is more selection for stuff like this

Depends what size your breakfast bar is. Have a look on DIY Kitchens. We created a breakfast bar in our kitchen a couple of years ago and got the units and worktop from there. We chose a laminate square edge worktop, ours was 2m x 0.9m and fully finished on all four sides so it can sit against the wall. They have other sizes and shapes too. The quality is great and we're just about to have the rest of the kitchen ripped out and replaced to match the breakfast bar.

If you hunt, most work tops come in both standard unit and breakfast bar size.

@NotMeNoNo - I didn’t realise this. I’ll hace another good look, thanks a lot for this - much appreciated.

www.diy.com/search?term=shopkalamattoakeffectlaminateworktop

you will be looking either for "breakfast bar" pieces or 900 wide x 2000 or 3000 long.

@notmenono that’s so so helpful, thank you. So I just order the pieces I need and the joiner cuts to size I take it? Sorry this is all probably so simple but I’m a complete novice so no clue at all!

Do you have a fitter or joiner yet? If so ask him ( her). They may have a local place they go to. I'm getting oak from worktopexpress standard and breakfast bar width and the area around the sink will probably be got by fitter from howdens as they send someone out. I would prefer not to use howdens but for ease that's likely

@scooverthemill thank you. He’s coming around later to have a look so will see what he says. Thanks very much!

@CoxwellHuge, what laminate did you choose?

Our worktop is the Durapol Stone Quartz.

It's pretty white with flecks of grey. It's been mistaken for a stone worktop in a few occasions. It's really hard-wearing and we've had red wine spilt on there, carrot peelings and all sorts that looks like it will stain but a wipe over with a cloth and a spray of kitchen cleaner and it's gone. I love it.

we went DIY duropal carrera marble laminate square edge and very impressed its 40 mm thick which is 10mm thicker then most laminates and its really good quality

Fivefootoffun · 30/06/2020 17:11

@issy - if you go square edge - can it then be rounded by joiner?

isseywith4vampirecats · 30/06/2020 17:27

no if you want rounded edge they do a range that is round edge on the website
I liked the look of the square one as ours is a straight L shape run on two walls

We've just replaced our worktop. We used worktop express. Fab company, our worktop is really good quality and reasonably priced, and their instructions for fitting were really easy to follow and great customer service. Would definitely recommend.

Thanks everyone, that’s incredibly helpful.
