Expected costs for painting

What would you expect to pay for painting a 1700sq ft house? In the South East.

We're getting quotes from £2-£3.5k which all seem really high to me...but I've got no idea what's reasonable!

For ceilings / woodwork etc and walls, that sounds about right (and they’re supplying paint?). We’ve just had quotes that were insane multiples of that, as well as the one we’re going for which is in that ballpark

Do you mean the interior or exterior, OP? I would ask how long they think the job will take them and work out if the daily rate seems reasonable. Obviously accounting for materials too.

If interior, we are zone 5 London and just paid £1760 for a new loft room and en suite, a box room bedroom, two flights of stairs including landings and ground floor hallway (ceilings, walls and woodwork).
That's not quite half the house.

Thanks both. We'd not being thinking about ceilings, but wonder if they are including that in the estimates.

(Ceilings have the horrible texture on them...but that will be a project later on!)

Work men are so expensive, I'm currently having my hallway done.
Current wallpaper being stripped, plastered and painted.
I nearly fell of my chair when the quotes come in.
It's the labour that cost so much but I haven't got the time or energy to do it anymore so needs must

Livingoffcoffee · 29/06/2020 09:52

@dewisant2020 I know...DH and I painted everything in our current house. But I told DH that I refuse to do it again in the house we're purchasing! He wants to strip wallpaper himself and just get someone in to paint.

I just feel clueless of what's reasonable to pay!

Can you break down the amount of rooms OP? Does it include skirting boards, around the windows and ceilings?

Have a look on this site to get some idea. You can get quotes from their members but you don't have to.

I have found the prices estimated on here are at the very bottom of what I have been quoted. EG This says around £1800 for a 20 sq m patio and I have been quoted from £1850 to £3000. So a big variation. Should give you some idea though.

I dont know what your house size means in terms of rooms, but up in cheap NE, we got our 4 bed painted, including gloss and ceilings, for 2k plus paint last summer.
