Twice now over the last few days I have noticed a smell of burning hair in our kitchen, what on earth could it be and should I be worried?

I would be concerned about your wiring.

I had this. One of the plugs started smoking about five minutes after I noticed it (despite it being rewired quite recently when we had a new kitchen - I knew that fitter was a wrong 'un).

I would be checking the wiring. Check the appliances one by one. Turn them on individually and feel to see if there are any hot spots. On plugs/sockets/casing round circuit board (, on microwave for example).
Turn things off at night until you track it down

Also check under cupboard counter lighting. These are often housed in plastic which over time deteriorates.
