Repainting Cast Aluminium - Help!

We've a small patio set where the original paint has gotten very chipped and I would like to repaint rather than get a new one. The problem is that even with scraping the chipped paint off there are still areas where the old paint is sound. What kind of paint would I use on this? I looked at Rustoleum universal paint but it mentioned that non-ferrous metals would need a primer. Should I get a primer and put it on top of the old paint and the bare metal? There is paint specific to non-ferrous metals but it says to apply directly to the bare metal. Do I have to strip all the old coating before doing this? Please tell me I don't need to do that! The set is a latticed metal bistro set and stripping it would take me ages.
Thank you!
