Is 6k a ridiculous amount to spend on a front door? Make me feel better with your stories of house extravagance...

We aren’t loaded, but have a decent amount of savings and are undertaking a huge renovation project. We are having the whole of front of the house ripped off and remodelled as it is hideous. We have budgeted hard to make our money go a long way, but feel that the front door is the first thing you see and has to have an impact. We can’t find anything we want ‘off the peg’ so have had a local company design us something bespoke. I love it, but feel incredibly guilty about spending so much on a door (even though we have haggled them down from over 7k). Please can someone come along and tell me some items they have splurged on which have improves their home to make me feel more at ease with parting with such a huge lump of cash (for us)...

That really is A LOT for a front door. We had a bespoke one made in London and it was about half that - although we did get quotes in the £6-7k region. I would shop around a bit!

That is including”lights” panels on either side if that makes a difference (though probably not!) Can you PM me the name of the company please? Maybe I need to rethink!

If this helps we are about to spend £8k on automated blinds for a large gable window in our new extensiom bedroom. It seems very painful to me as it was more than the window cost.

Just think that you are supporting a local business, getting something that will give you pleasure for years to come and improve the resale of your house.

When we were doing our house up, we were let down last minute by the tile shop and I had 24 hours to choose replacement tiles as the tiler was booked and it would have thrown the whole schedule off. So, I trailed two small children round tile shops and we were limited to ones they had in stock which made for very limited options. Finally tried the poshest tile shop in town and they had a box of mosaic tiles that I fell in love with. £350 per sq m!!! We didn't need much so I persuaded DH! They are beautiful and I still love them.

I just got a navy blue front door, a back door, and two Velux windows fitted for less than 7k.
I think you'd be insane to spend that much on one door, unless you have money to piss away.

Wow. I suppose it’s all relative. That’s 3 months Salary for me so I definitely wouldn’t spend that on a door I’m on going to look at twice a day. If you can afford and you love it go for it.

My most extravagant purchase was £1000 on a painting. I don’t know much about art, I fell in love with this when I saw it in a gallery. I haggled him down from £1500, so I felt like I got a bargain, but could easily have been massively ripped off.

It was my entire bonus and obviously before I had children. 20 years later I still love it.

What about having it made in wood? Same look but better value.

That looks like a £6,000 door OP, especially a bespoke version in iron! I don’t imagine you would get something of that style and quality for less, don’t feel guilty it will look fabulous.

It depends. A grand house then yes, a more modest house and a fancy front door might look a bit ridiculous.

Well, that's a pretty nice door, op. I'm not sure I'd ever spend that kind of money on a door regardless of how nice it is but I guess if you have spare cash burning a hole in your pocket then it's up to you.

I think our front door was pretty expensive when we did it up. It was also custom made and hung by a carpenter. Then painted by a decorator. We also commissioned stained glass l panels for the door which were cast and fitted. It was worth it! Actually received a number of letters through the post box asking us where we bought the door!

Work it out as a percentage of the value of your home. That might make you feel better.

I had a quote for £18k for automated gates. Which I nearly choked over...decided to spend half that on “normal” gates.

It looks like a very stylish door. Don’t scrimp ( unless you are going to have to eat beans on toast every meal for the next 5 years )

An absolutely ridiculous amount for a door. However, if I was going to pay 6k for a door then that one would be it, it is a thing of beauty.

My exhusband spent $6000 on a custom purple soaking tub for me. It was glorious. I miss it all the time

About to spend £3.7k on decorating ( unbudgeted for) as part of loft conversion. It includes 2 landings, hallway banisters and railings and ceilings and 8 doors... but still....

It’s a bit boring, but I’d potentially spend that sort of money on something amazing.

For £6k I’d want something a bit more wow.

That looks like an expensive door, so I think that the 6k sounds right. If I had a fancy house and plenty of cash then I’d spend it. Money is for spending after all, and I believe in spreading the wealth and supporting local businesses and craftspeople.

Seems a crazy amount to me for a door. Depends on whether you can justify it.
