Finding a kitchen

Sunisshining12 · 18/06/2020 21:41

I’m looking for a black/near black modern slab kitchen with handles:

Like this IKEA one, but the reviews make it a no! www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/kungsbacka-door-anthracite-20337341/

Wren option is the Contour in Nero - but I wasn’t blown away with quality of the doors/carcasses.

Where else is reasonably priced? Ideally will need finance.

And, more to the point, am I mad having a dark matt kitchen? Does anyone here have one? Love or loath? My OH isn’t keen, but I’m sick of shaker cream & just want something different! The kitchen is large(ish) with bifolding doors so light. Would like a white marble looking quartz worktop if budget allows.

TIA

I have dark (navy) matt base units and my island has the navy cupboards with white quartz worktops and a two tier white quartz breakfast bar - it all looks good together. My wall units are a lighter shade though as whilst I have a large kitchen I didn't want it to feel smaller. Also - I wouldn't use Wren.

Thanks for your reply :) Do you have wall units in a different colour then? I wasn’t blown away with wren

How about DIY Kitchens’ Carrera Painted in Matt Carbon? www.diy-kitchens.com/kitchens/carrera-matt-carbon/details/

This looks gorgeous! Thanks for the link! Only thing that puts me off DIY is that we are such a trek away so can’t get to the showroom. And they don’t do finance (so would have to get a low interest loan or credit card - but prefer to use that for the appliances, worktop, flooring etc).

The ikea reviews really scare me about how easily scratched & unable to clean grease & marks off. Is this the nature of the beast with black Matt? Or is this perhaps the finish IKEA use?

Welcome any suggestions for a similar but not as drastic look (as a plan b for OH!)

Any opinions on the Carbon matt kitchen please? I don’t want grey or cream... Thanks

Looking at appliances. 2 ovens, microwave & coffee machine. Would this look better to have all together in a grid of 4? Or have the coffee machine & microwave stacked in one area and the ovens side by side in the other area?

DIY Kitchens will send out samples. Doors and bits of painted hardboard for carcase colour. You have to pay for the doors but you get it back when you return them or off your kitchen if you buy.

Are you on a rail route that goes near DIY, it's not far from a station and in normal times they will pick you up from the station.

Loofah01 · 19/06/2020 12:51

Just muck about on the DIY Kitchens site. there's plenty of examples to look at plus the planner tool which is ace.

Sunisshining12 · 19/06/2020 13:03

Thanks both. I’m not even on a rail route for there either 😭 Just ordered some carbon samples, thanks for the recommendations. If I like, we may have a long road trip up there once covid has settled down a bit more.

Back to the colour - yay or nay?

Appliances - 4 in a grid style? Or separated on 2 different walls? Thanks again

Our DIY kitchen is arriving in about an hour from now we looked t all the alternatives and for price and quality we went with DIY £2000 cheaper than wickes, we are lucky we live just over and hour from the showroom we went in with light grey matt in mind saw the altino petrol blue gloss and fell in love with that instead, it is worth trying to go to the showroom as they have mini kitchens in situ and you can open drawers doors and see what your kitchen might look like put together they also have samples of all the doors and worktops and you can pay with combinations

isseywith4vampirecats · 19/06/2020 16:36

and the online planner you can play with different set ups for your appliances to see what works best

We are planning on the same colour when we (finally) complete on our new house (hopefully) next month. Going to go with DIY kitchens.

isseywith4vampirecats · 19/06/2020 18:48

my kitchen is now full of boxes and my joiner (ex son in law) will be here tomorrow morning will post pics when the cabinets are in but tiling will be next week and flooring will be week after as we have to have the front room rewired so not putting new flooring in till that's done

Sunisshining12 · 19/06/2020 20:46

Great. Thanks all, awaiting DIY samples

Howdens?
www.howdens.com/kitchens/fitted-kitchens?colour=Black

I am also interested in DIY Kitchens but don't fancy the trek to the showroom!

isseywith4vampirecats · 20/06/2020 19:00

joiner came today to start on my kitchen brought his older son with him who fits kitchens for a living and he was very impressed with the quality of the units and the price hes now going to look at DIY kitchens and recommend them to other people

isseywith4vampirecats · 20/06/2020 19:01

he said they are much better than howdens ones

AnotherEmma · 20/06/2020 19:17

Interesting!

BigRedBoat · 20/06/2020 19:44

Following as I want the same except handle less in our new house, I think wickes and Howdens both have ranges that would fit the bill. Not sure on prices though, I would be interested to know what prices you find.

Sunisshining12 · 20/06/2020 19:58

I’ve had a wobble today & worried the near black may make the kitchen feel darker & smaller, especially in winter? Guy in howdens also said trouble with black is it shows all the marks.

Arghh... don’t know what to do now!

OP posts:
isseywith4vampirecats · 20/06/2020 20:01

@BigRedBoat I don't know about howdens as we didn't look at thiers but wickes quoted us £4700 and DIY came in at £3000

Sunisshining12 · 20/06/2020 22:01

DIY have come in £2k cheaper than Wren for us. Heading to Howdens this week & an independent place too. Will report back with prices.

It’s just the colour choice now.. black or Taupe...shaker or slab with handle... HELP!

OP posts:
Whyisitsodifficult · 20/06/2020 22:05

This slab front in frame is lovely!
www.1909kitchens.co.uk/kitchens/slab/

isseywith4vampirecats · 20/06/2020 22:08

weve gone for slab with handles as shaker looks nice in a traditional country setting look kitchen but shaker has all the recesses in the doors and drawers and I kept thinking trying to keep all those corners and lines clean
