Indoor electricity meter

We are having an extension built and as a result our once outdoor electricity meter will end up indoors in a cupboard. Does anyone know if this is allowed? Should they stay on an external wall if this was where they were originally positioned?

my electricity meter in indoors. My gas meter is outdoors

My electric meter is on my stairs.
My mums gas meter is in her kitchen, and Eon or British Gas have never said it needs to be outside.
