Hi, I'm looking at a flat to rent, if anyone knows this area at all? Thank you

Don't do it 🤷‍♀️

pnutter · 17/06/2020 03:54

Oh Grinwould you care to elaborate??

MikeEhrmantraut · 17/06/2020 09:54

Personally I wouldn't either. Crime rates are high.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 17/06/2020 16:30

piggy backing onto pnutters thread, I'm also thinking about Bristol. Where is nice and where is not? I can guess a bit from prices on rightmove, but it's tricky to weed out houseshares and where is totally student-ville. Not interested in schools btw, but do need decent public transport.

bowchicawowwow · 17/06/2020 16:34

I wouldn't move there either. What reasons were you looking at Barton Hill for? Might be able to suggest some alternatives

Takingontheworld · 17/06/2020 17:10

Bishopston, st Andrews, redland, Clifton, henleaze, stoke gifford, bradly stoke, some areas of filton. Depends what area you need to be near for work?

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 17/06/2020 17:38

for me, I work from home, so no need to be in any particular place. I'd need to be able to get to Temple Meads station relatively easily (occasional meetings in London), but other than that I'm not fussed.

Thoughts on Southville/Bedminster? What's near the river like? Grim or lovely?

I'd identified Clifton as being OK from house prices, generally you're thinking to the north and west of the city?

Greenkit · 17/06/2020 17:42

Nope, not the best area.

makingmyway10 · 17/06/2020 17:51

Barton Hill is not a 'pleasant' area. Other places are nicer and safer. Clifton is lovely, a world away from Barton Hill depends on your budget.

Takingontheworld · 17/06/2020 17:59

Really depends. Are you looking for a hipster grime or niace area....

BatSegundo · 17/06/2020 18:07

Near Temple Meads - Knowle, Totterdown, Windmill Hill, Victoria Park, much of Bedminster are all nice. Southville and Howells are nice but dear. Clifton, Cotham and Redland are nice but very expensive.

277xo · 17/06/2020 18:12

Not Barton Hill.. what kind of area are you looking for? If you want lots of things going and a bit more of an urban vibe look at Southville, Bedminster, Bishopston/Gloucester Rd area and Montpelier. If you want things going on but fancy then Clifton, Redland and Cotham. If you want to get into Temple Meads really quickly and don’t mind a family type neighbourhood then look around Stoke Gifford area as you can get a train from Parkway into Temple Meads in about 10 minutes, much quicker than bus or walking.

PurBal · 17/06/2020 18:16

Barton Hill no. Someone asked about Southville / Bedminster. Nicer than Clifton / Redland in my opinion. Lots of young families and few students!

ThickFast · 17/06/2020 18:25

Redfield is the next bit along from Barton hill. But nicer. So it depends what area of Barton hill you mean. I wouldn’t go for Clifton area but that’s because it’s too posh for me. Never get a very nice vibe off it. St Andrews is nice but crap parking.

ThickFast · 17/06/2020 18:25

Southville bedminster and totterdown are good

Thesunrising · 17/06/2020 18:29

Barton Hill has the worst air quality in Bristol - so avoid if you have asthma or like to exercise outdoors. Bedminster/Totterdown are both within walking distance of temple meads and the city centre. Avoid Clifton - it’s too far, stuck up a big hill and pricey.

Jade308 · 17/06/2020 18:52

No but St George/Whitehall are okay though

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/06/2020 18:59

Barton Hill is one of the most deprived areas in the south west and tends to be where the council place refugees and immigrants (it has a large Somali population) requiring emergency housing.
It's dreadful for parking as it's just outside the residents parking zone so commuters park up in the side streets and walk into the city centre.

MaMaLa321 · 18/06/2020 07:29

As others have said, Barton Hill is a no-no.
As for the rest, it depends on your budget. Southville is very nice, but ridiculously expensive.

I really like Knowle (but NOT Knowle West, which is very different). Knowle has good shops, and doesn't seem to be hideously overpriced, plus has some great houses.
Good luck

pnutter · 18/06/2020 16:05

Oh bums, it's a really ideal flat for me and dd. Good price too. Its in a quiet street cul de sac. Still, I'd rather know before I commit myself. Viewing tomorrow, thanks all

MrsMoastyToasty · 20/06/2020 18:03

Did you view the flat?

pnutter · 21/06/2020 09:35

Yes, flat is good. The area was quiet, it was in a cul de sac however, surrounded by Tower blocks that looked a bit run down. Everyone I smiled at seemed friendly enough. Lovely guy in local shop. I think about 10 min walk into centre. Also loads of public transport.

OP posts:
Takingontheworld · 21/06/2020 09:51

I used to see a guy who lived in one of those tower blocks. Still gives me shudders now. He would walk me to my car and then follow me out of Barton hill to the motor way in his car to make sure i was safe.

It always felt very dirty and while everyone was friendly-community is always strong in places like that, but only if you were local and had grown up there. More likely to get pick pocketed if clearly new.

Eventually a neighbour of his was stabbed in their parking lot so he was convinced to move! He went to bedminster which whilst not my favourite place in Bristol was a million times better. he ended up being a cheating prick though so no idea where he is now

WrinklesShminkles · 21/06/2020 15:25

I'd look along the Severn Beach line which connects Clifton, Redland, Montpellier to Temple Meads. This would give you a lot of choice in quite nice residential areas, eg, Ashley Down. I believe there are some good schools in these areas too, if your DD is at school. Gloucester/Cheltenham Road are close to the centre (lots of buses, also reasonably flat for cycling).

MaMaLa321 · 21/06/2020 15:47

...or Severn Beach itself.
