How do I brighten a room with no windows?

We live in a 2 bed flat which is rarther large in the grand scheme of 2 bed flats, lots of livable space. However we find toddler DS gets a bit fed up in the living room so we have decided to turn the large storage room into a play room.
It's quite a small room but large for a storage room and currently houses the tume dryer, suitcases, storage boxes etc. I've found places for all of that stuff but am left with a room with no windows which is obviously very dark. At the moment it is painted magnolia with a white ceiling and cream carpet.
I need to do this as cheaply as I can so ideally I want to avoid painint as I'm pregnant with dc2 and frankly can't be arsed to paint!

Does anyone have any ideas how I can brighten this room? Will lamps help rather than overhead light? I was thinking wall stickers of animals or something on one wall and a chalk board on the other but I'm just not sure how to brighten the room.

I was thinking of maybe taking the door off to allow some more natural light in?
We are also limited because there is no electricity in there other than an extention lead coming around from our bedroom next door!
What tricks are there to lighten a room on a budget?

You can buy a window light box so it looks like a window and switch in on and off

a door with glass panels?

mirror (not useful in a playroom though)

light walls bright posters, bright ceiling light

Looking at ideas! You could get a large framed and add LED lights - the sort you stick in in a strip. Then add voile curtains so it gives the impression of a window

definitely take the door off

to make the most of the darkness, you could make a den with cushions on the floor and then lots of fairy lights?

I hadn't even thought of a fake window set up... Bloody love mn sometimes! Off to Google!
Would do a den but I think that will be better when they're older. At the moment DS has a teepee that he doesn't really sit in himself but demands his dad sits in it while he serves him food from his kitchen!

Ikea have light panels which look like windows - search for floalt light panel. We've got one in a very dark corner and it's great much more natural than other lighting.

Have a look in IKEA when you can get there. Their room sets have no external windows. Massive brownie points to them as well for furloughing workers and paying for it all themselves.
