Mould in the home.

Hi ladies, I’m just wondering if anybody has ever had a mould issue in the home? We are in a very old cottage which is quite damp and parts of the house are mouldly such as bathroom (in and between the tiles of the shower) and around the window in the bedroom. Did you have any side effects or health issues due to this? I have had a burning throat daily (without fail) for 2 months and I am absolutely convinced it’s due to the mould. I have been on the absolute maximum of medication for reflux and it doesn’t give me any relief what so ever. I am planning on moving out within the next month or two so not so bad and where we are moving to is mould free! I’m just very curious as to whether anybody is suffering with the same thing? It is really hurting...when I say it burns I mean it really does burn!!! Any responses appreciated. Take care all. Xox

yes you can certainly get respiratory issues in a mouldy house.

any house can acquire a mould problem. the damp that provides a good environment for mould to grow can be caused by 3 things - lack of ventilation if steam from showers, cooking etc can't escape - install extractor fans and get a dehumidifier. lack of full insulation - especially if you have partial insulation so most of the walls have cavity insulation and most of the attic has loft insulation but there are patches where it is missing - you then get cold spots in a room where moisture is encouraged to condense. also seepage of water into the structure from weather or up from the ground - good maintenance includes re-pointing the mortar when cracks develop.

obviously as you are moving out this will all be left for the next occupant of this property, but your new property could develop these issues in time so worth thinking about these issues for that one too.
