What tools do you need as a homeowner?

Not ever done much DIY as mostly rented - what tools are essential and likely things I’d get best value out of money using myself to do jobs around the house?

Also, brand/product recommendations welcome :)

A cordless drill, I use mine pretty much every week. Also a ratchet screwdriver and socket wrench set is pretty useful, and an adjustable wrench.

My drill is a DeWalt, and I buy good quality bits. The other stuff can be generic really, there’s not a huge difference in quality in my experience - none that would matter for occasional DIY anyway.

Except for paint brushes - get good paint brushes and keep them clean and in good condition (and do as I say, not as I do - I am a sloppy painter and abuse my brushes).

As above, and also a set of Allen keys, and screwdrivers of varying sizes for minor jobs. A hammer. A wee hack saw. A spirit level. A drawer to keep all the various nails, screws, washers, etc which you accumulate and will come in handy sometime. A tape measure. Set of ladders.

Things I have used the most:

  • drill
  • electric screwdriver
  • sander (we redecorated almost every room)
  • allen keys
  • normal screwdrivers
  • ladders
  • a lifetime supply of paintbrushes, rollers, roller trays, frog tape ]grin]

We had to make an at-home tool kit as DH kept taking everything to work.
Screwdrivers (including tiny ones), allen keys, hammer, Pliers/sidecutters, few spanners/adjustable spanners.
Cordless drill and screwdriver/drill bits
at least 5m tape measure
If you have painting to do then yes brushes, white spirit, tape. Get to know your local Screwfix.
Also we have this little tool bag from Wilko, I think it's insanely cute for some reason!

I bought a set from amazon on a Black Friday deal for my Dd when she left home. It was a bit like this one:

I couldn’t live (DIY wise!) without an electric screwdriver.

Recommend locating your stop cock and determining how to turn it off. In our case it requires a spanner. So we have a spanner which lives by it, attached by a piece of string, not to be taken anywhere else. Oh and a torch/head torch kept in a special place for power cuts, fuse tripping etc.
